Frequently Asked Questions
24K gold is 99.9% pure gold — the highest purity. However, it is very soft and not suitable for jewellery. 22K gold is 91.67% pure gold mixed with 8.33% other metals (silver, copper, zinc) to add hardness. 22K is the standard for gold jewellery in India and is BIS hallmarked. 18K gold is 75% pure and is common for diamond-studded jewellery as it is harder.
The final gold jewellery price is calculated as:
Total = (Weight × Purity Factor × Gold Rate per gram) + Making Charges + 3% GST
For example, a 10g 22K gold ring at ₹7,500/g (24K), with 10% making charges:
Metal cost = 10 × 0.9167 × ₹7,500 = ₹68,752
Making charges = 10% of ₹68,752 = ₹6,875
GST (3%) = 3% of ₹75,627 = ₹2,269
Total = ₹77,896
Making charges are the labour and craftsmanship fees charged by jewellers for designing and crafting jewellery. They are charged either as a percentage of the gold value (8–15% is typical) or as a flat rate per gram. Making charges vary by design complexity — simple plain bangles have lower making charges compared to intricate handcrafted designs. Unlike gold price, making charges are negotiable at many jewellers.
Yes. In India, GST is charged at 3% on gold and gold jewellery (on the value of gold + making charges). An additional 5% GST applies on making charges separately in some cases. For simplicity, this calculator applies a flat 3% GST on the total of metal cost + making charges, which is the most common billing method.
A Tola is a traditional Indian unit of weight for gold, equal to 11.664 grams. It is widely used in gold trading across India, Nepal, and Pakistan. 10 grams of gold is equivalent to approximately 0.857 Tola. Many jewellers and commodities markets still quote gold prices in Tola, especially in wholesale markets.
Gold prices vary across Indian cities due to local taxes (octroi, entry tax), transportation costs, local demand, and the practices of local jewellery associations. Cities like Mumbai and Chennai often have slightly different rates from Delhi or Bangalore. The calculator uses the national reference rate (Bangalore base price).
