Same Job: Cleaning Up Exhaust
Both platinum and palladium are precious metals, but their single largest source of demand isn't jewellery or investment — it's catalytic converters, the emissions-control devices fitted to almost every combustion-engine vehicle sold. Diesel engines have historically favoured platinum-based catalysts, while petrol (gasoline) engines favour palladium — a split that matters enormously, because it means the two metals' fortunes track two different segments of the global auto market rather than moving as one "precious metals" block.
How Palladium Overtook Platinum
For decades platinum traded at a premium to palladium, reflecting its rarity and its role in diesel-heavy European markets. That flipped as diesel's popularity fell (accelerated by the diesel-emissions scandals of the mid-2010s) while petrol-vehicle sales, and palladium demand with them, kept climbing — pushing palladium to trade above platinum for an extended stretch, an inversion that would have seemed unthinkable to traders a generation earlier.
Substitution: The Trader's Wildcard
Because platinum and palladium can be chemically substituted for each other in catalyst design within limits, automakers actively re-engineer catalysts toward whichever metal is cheaper when the price gap gets wide enough — a real, documented behaviour, not just theory. That substitution threat acts as a natural ceiling: it discourages either metal from running too far ahead of the other for too long, since a sustained premium eventually erodes the very demand driving it.
What the EV Transition Means for Both
Battery-electric vehicles need no catalytic converter at all — no combustion, no exhaust to clean. That makes both metals' long-run demand outlook genuinely tied to how fast combustion-engine vehicles get replaced, a slower-moving but structurally important trend layered on top of the two metals' shorter-term diesel-versus-petrol tug of war. Platinum has a partial offset here that palladium mostly lacks: a growing role in hydrogen fuel cells, an entirely separate demand source palladium doesn't share.
