The world's largest gold-buying nation by retail demand — where the price on this page isn't an abstraction, it's a wedding budget line item for millions of families every year.
Gold Price — Last 30 Days
Demand Follows the Calendar, Not the Market
Gold buying in India spikes around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali, and the wedding season, not around global price dips the way a purely investment-driven market would. That cultural rhythm is a big part of why India's own gold price carries a real, distinct local premium rather than just tracking the global spot rate one-to-one.
Why India's Price Isn't the World's Price
Import duty and local market premiums mean India's gold and silver prices sit above the pure international spot rate converted to rupees — a genuine local market, not just a currency-converted mirror of London or New York. MCX, India's own futures exchange, is the reference point most Indian traders actually watch.
The Bond That Tried to Replace the Locker
India launched Sovereign Gold Bonds in 2015 specifically to give savers an alternative to physical gold, aiming to shrink the country's gold import bill and the trade deficit it widens. The scheme paid 2.5% annual interest on top of tracking the gold price — a real edge over an idle coin in a locker — but the government discontinued new SGB issuance after the February 2024 tranche, citing high borrowing costs relative to ordinary bonds and acknowledging the import-reduction goal hadn't materialised as hoped. Existing SGBs still trade on the NSE and BSE.
Metals & Mining Industry
Beyond gold and silver, India runs one of the world's largest steel industries — Tata Steel, JSW Steel and state-owned SAIL together make India the second-largest crude steel producer on Earth, built on genuinely large domestic iron ore reserves in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Aluminium follows a similar pattern: Hindalco, Vedanta and NALCO draw on substantial bauxite deposits to make India a top-five global aluminium producer. Copper tells the opposite story — Hindustan Copper's domestic mining barely dents demand, so most refined copper comes from smelting imported concentrate rather than Indian ore. Gold mining itself remains negligible despite the country's retail appetite for it.
Consumption & Trade
India's construction and infrastructure boom absorbs most of its own steel and aluminium output, with export volumes rising mainly when domestic demand softens. Automotive and electronics manufacturing add further pressure, particularly for copper wiring and components. But the country runs large trade deficits in the metals people actually price on this site: it imports the vast majority of its gold, most of its copper concentrate, and a growing share of critical minerals like lithium and cobalt needed for battery manufacturing, none of which are mined domestically at meaningful scale. That import bill is a genuine line item in India's broader current-account math, not a rounding error.

Did You Know?
India doesn't mine enough gold to matter — it's overwhelmingly an importer — yet its retail demand alone is large enough to move global prices around festival season.
