The clearest example of New Zealand's metals trade is the Tiwai Point smelter near Bluff, run by New Zealand Aluminium Smelters: it imports alumina from Australia and turns it into refined aluminium using the country's abundant hydroelectric power, then exports nearly all of that metal rather than consuming it domestically. That import-raw-material, export-refined-metal pattern is unusual for a country this small. Beyond that, New Zealand's agriculture- and construction-driven economy imports most of the steel and other finished metal it actually uses day to day, funded by dairy and other agricultural exports rather than by any mining income.
