Nigeria Metal Prices Today
Prices in Naira (NGN) · Reference market: Closed LBMA
Africa's largest economy by GDP, with mineral wealth that remains largely untapped relative to its scale — most of the metal priced here is still imported, not mined locally.

Wealth in the Ground, Not Yet in Production
Nigeria has real deposits of gold, tin and other metals, but decades of underinvestment in mining infrastructure — overshadowed by the country's oil sector — mean actual production remains modest relative to the country's mineral potential. Most metal consumed domestically is still imported.
A Currency in Transition
The Nigerian naira has undergone major devaluation and policy changes in recent years, which shows up clearly in NGN-denominated prices here — one more case where local-currency price swings often say more about currency policy than about global metal markets.
The Formal Sector's Informal Shadow
A large share of Nigeria's actual mineral output happens outside formal, regulated mining altogether — informal and artisanal operations extracting gold and other metals with little oversight, echoing the same labour, safety and traceability concerns documented in artisanal cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Formalising that informal sector is a recurring goal of Nigerian mining policy, precisely because so much of the country's real production currently sits outside the numbers that would otherwise count toward it.
Metals & Mining Industry
Nigeria's mineral list is longer than its production numbers suggest — iron ore at Itakpe, coal, lead-zinc, and a historic tin-and-columbite belt on the Jos Plateau that British colonial-era mining once worked at real scale before it collapsed into today's mostly artisanal operations. The clearest symbol of underdeveloped domestic metal industry is Ajaokuta Steel: a state-owned plant started in the 1970s that has still never reached full production after decades of stalled investment, leaving Nigeria's own iron ore largely unprocessed at home despite the raw material sitting in the ground.
Consumption & Trade
Nigeria's fast-growing cities drive real demand for steel rebar and aluminium roofing sheets, and because so little of that metal gets processed domestically, most of it arrives as imports rather than local production — Ajaokuta's stalled output leaves a gap that finished-steel imports fill instead. Vehicle demand is met mostly through imports too, though small domestic assemblers like Innoson build some vehicles locally. With oil and gas dominating export earnings, Nigeria's metals trade runs heavily one-directional: imported finished and semi-finished metal products in, with only modest mineral exports going the other way.
Did You Know?
Despite being Africa's largest economy overall, Nigeria's formal mining sector remains a small share of GDP compared with its oil industry — a gap the government has repeatedly said it wants to close.
