Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets are the strongest commercially available, and they're what let EV motors, wind-turbine generators, hard drives and headphone speakers be as compact and powerful as they are — swap them out for older magnet technology and the same power output needs a noticeably bigger, heavier motor.

Recovering neodymium from old hard drives, speakers and electric motors is technically possible and a genuine area of active research and early commercial activity, but it remains a small share of overall supply today — the magnets are typically glued or welded into assemblies that make disassembly costly, which is part of why China's mined and refined output still dominates over any recycled alternative.
