Aluminium Metal Chain
Detailed supply-chain mapping is currently being developed for Aluminium. In the meantime, see the metal profile and reserves & production data already available.
The Most Energy-Hungry Metal in This List
Smelting alumina into aluminium metal consumes vast amounts of electricity, which is why smelters cluster around cheap, reliable power — Canada's hydroelectric-rich Quebec being a textbook example — rather than simply near the bauxite mines themselves.
From Bauxite to Beverage Can
Australia mines huge volumes of bauxite ore and refines much of it into alumina before it's ever smelted into metal, while India's own aluminium industry (Hindalco, NALCO) has grown into one of the world's larger producers in its own right — two very different points on the same supply chain.
Recycling Skips the Expensive Part Entirely
Recycling aluminium takes around 5% of the energy needed to produce virgin metal from bauxite ore, because it skips the electricity-intensive smelting step described above entirely — which is exactly why used cans and scrap carry real economic value and get collected and remelted at unusually high rates worldwide, unlike many other packaging materials that end up as pure waste.
Did You Know?
Aluminium is lighter than steel by roughly two-thirds for a given volume, which is the entire reason automakers and aircraft manufacturers keep switching to it despite steel usually being cheaper.
