Gasoline's Metal of Choice

Palladium does for petrol (gasoline) engines what platinum does for diesel — converting exhaust gases into less toxic emissions inside a catalytic converter. As petrol's share of the global vehicle market grew and emissions standards tightened, palladium demand overtook platinum's, reshaping which metal automakers actually needed more of.

Supply Concentrated in Two Places

South Africa and Russia together produce the large majority of the world's mined palladium — a concentration that makes the metal unusually sensitive to mining disruptions and geopolitical risk, and a big part of why palladium has been one of the more volatile metals to track.

One Producer's Byproduct, the World's Problem

Russia's palladium output is overwhelmingly a byproduct of one major producer's nickel mining, not a dedicated palladium industry — meaning global supply is hostage to that single company's operating decisions and to whatever sanctions or export restrictions geopolitics throws at Russian metal exports in a given year, a direct supply-chain vulnerability few other metals on this site share so acutely.

Did You Know?

Palladium traded above gold for most of 2019–2022 — a first in the metal's history — almost entirely because of tightening petrol-vehicle emissions rules, not investment demand.
