Utah Incentives Lift Anson's Green River Lithium Project Value Above $1 Billion

Outlook: Neutral · October 8, 2026
Utah Incentives Lift Anson's Green River Lithium Project Value Above $1 Billion

Two Utah state incentives have raised the estimated value of Anson Resources' Green River lithium project by about $150 million. Its after-tax net present value now tops $1 billion, while the $569 million build cost is unchanged.

At a glance

  • Green River's pre-tax net present value rose 10.9%, from $1.37 billion to $1.52 billion.
  • The after-tax value climbed from $896 million to just over $1 billion.
  • The gain comes entirely from two Utah incentives, and the $569 million build cost is unchanged.

Background

Net present value (NPV) estimates what a project's future cash flows are worth today, after costs. Anson Resources is an ASX-listed company developing the Green River lithium project in Utah. It plans to use direct lithium extraction (DLE), which pulls lithium from underground brine without large evaporation ponds, to make battery-grade lithium carbonate.

What happened

Anson Resources updated the economics of its Green River lithium project on October 7 to include two newly approved Utah state incentives. The base-case pre-tax NPV, at an 8% discount rate, rose from $1.37 billion to $1.52 billion. On an after-tax basis it increased from $896 million to just over $1 billion.

The project's estimated construction cost stays at $569 million. Green River is designed to produce 10,000 tonnes a year of battery-grade lithium carbonate over a 20-year life.

Where the extra value comes from

The first incentive comes from the Utah Inland Port Authority and is worth up to about $193 million. It equals half of the extra property tax the project is expected to generate. Anson receives it as a rebate over up to 25 years once the project is built.

The second is a refundable tax credit of about $212 million from the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity. It equals half of an estimated $425 million in extra state tax revenue over 20 years and is paid only after the project performs. Anson assumes the incentives arrive evenly, at about $10.6 million a year.

What it means

A higher valuation with no change in the build cost gives Anson a stronger case to put to lenders and partners. The company is now working on a definitive feasibility study and talking to strategic investors and project finance providers.

The update also shows Utah using tax rebates to attract a battery-metal project. The state will pay back half of the extra tax the project generates, but only once Green River is built and performing.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. A higher project valuation does not change lithium supply today. Green River's 10,000 tonnes a year would only arrive after financing and construction.

What to watch

  • The definitive feasibility study, which will firm up Green River's costs and returns.
  • Whether Anson signs a strategic investor or project finance package.
  • Any final investment decision on the $569 million first phase.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-07: Anson raises Green River's NPV to include two Utah state incentives.

Supply Drivers

Green River would add 10,000 tonnes a year of US lithium carbonate if it is financed and built.

Government Policies

Utah will rebate half of the project's extra property and state tax revenue to support local lithium production.

What could lift prices

  • Green River's output would only arrive after a feasibility study, financing and construction.
  • Anson has not yet secured project financing for the $569 million first phase.

What could weigh on prices

  • Government incentives could help more US lithium projects reach production.
  • Better project economics make new lithium supply more likely over time.

Who gains, who loses

  • Anson Resources: A project worth over $1 billion after tax is easier to finance.
  • Utah taxpayers: The state gives back half of the project's extra tax revenue as incentives.

Other ways this could play out

  • If the feasibility study confirms the scoping numbers, Anson could move toward a financing package.
  • If costs rise in the feasibility study, the incentives may only offset part of the increase.

Price risks

  • A single 10,000-tonne project is too small to shift lithium prices.
  • The incentives are paid only after the project is built and performing.
