B2Gold has found a new high-grade gold zone at its Goose mine in Arctic Canada and kept its 2026 production target. A $16 million mobile crusher has carried the mine through repairs after an April fire.
At a glance
- Drilling at the new Tattuk zone returned 10.94 grams of gold per tonne over 9.95 metres.
- Goose is still expected to produce 170,000 to 200,000 ounces of gold in 2026.
- Repairs and upgrades to the fixed crushing plant are due to finish in mid-October.
Background
Goose is B2Gold's mine in the Back River district of Nunavut, in Canada's far north. Before ore can be milled to recover gold, it must be crushed into smaller pieces. That makes the crusher a bottleneck: if it stops, the mill runs short of feed and the whole mine's output suffers.
What happened
B2Gold reported a new high-grade discovery at Goose on Monday. A hole at the newly named Tattuk zone returned 10.94 grams of gold per tonne over 9.95 metres, about 150 metres down plunge from the Nuvuyak zone. Drilling at the Llama deposit returned 44.61 grams per tonne over 4.65 metres.
The company also kept its 2026 guidance of 170,000 to 200,000 ounces from Goose. "We remain confident in our ability to achieve 170,000 to 200,000 ounces of gold production at Goose this year," said chief executive Mike Cinnamond.
How the mine worked around the fire
A fire in April damaged the fixed crushing plant and its conveyor belt. B2Gold bought a mobile crushing plant for about $16 million to fill the gap. It arrived in July, was commissioned in August and has crushed more than 3,000 tonnes of ore a day since mid-August, in line with plan.
The permanent fix is close. Phase 1 upgrades to the fixed crusher, including a larger jaw crusher, are due in mid-October, along with the conveyor repairs. From October, the fixed plant should run at a sustained average of 3,200 tonnes a day.
What it means
Holding guidance after a major equipment fire shows the ramp-up is back on track, though not yet finished. Third-quarter output is expected to be broadly in line with the first quarter. A Phase 2 upgrade in the first half of 2027 will need about 10 weeks of downtime.
The drilling results matter for Goose's long-term life. B2Gold is spending $51 million on more than 35,000 metres of drilling across the Back River district this year. New high-grade zones close to existing ones could extend the mine's reserves.
Our read
Outlook: neutral. Goose's output of up to 200,000 ounces a year is small against global gold supply. The update matters for B2Gold's shares, not for the gold price.
What to watch
- Commissioning of the Phase 1 fixed-crusher upgrades and conveyor repairs in mid-October.
- Fourth-quarter output, which will show whether Goose can reach its 2026 guidance.
- Follow-up drilling at Tattuk to test how far the new zone extends.

Detailed analysis
Timeline
- 2026-04: A fire damages Goose's fixed crushing plant and conveyor belt.
- 2026-08: A $16 million mobile crushing plant is commissioned and runs above 3,000 tonnes a day.
- 2026-09-28: B2Gold reports the new Tattuk zone and keeps 2026 guidance.
- 2026-10: Phase 1 fixed-crusher upgrades and conveyor repairs due for completion.
Supply Drivers
New high-grade zones like Tattuk could extend Goose's reserves and long-term gold output.
Mining Production
A $16 million mobile crusher kept Goose on track for 170,000 to 200,000 ounces despite an April fire.
What could lift prices
- High-grade discoveries near existing zones can be mined at lower cost per ounce.
- Unchanged guidance suggests the fire's damage to output was contained.
What could weigh on prices
- A 10-week shutdown for Phase 2 upgrades in 2027 will cut output that year.
- Third-quarter production is only in line with the first quarter, not yet higher.
Country impact
| Country | Impact | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Low | Goose's recovery keeps a Nunavut gold mine on track for its 2026 output target. |
Industry impact
| Industry | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Mining | Positive | A new high-grade zone and held guidance support confidence in a hard Arctic operation. |
Who gains, who loses
- B2Gold shareholders: Guidance holds and a new zone adds to the mine's long-term potential.
- No clear loser: The update adds output potential at an existing mine without taking share from rivals.
Other ways this could play out
- If the fixed crusher reaches 3,200 tonnes a day on schedule, Goose could land near the top of its guidance.
- If the October repairs slip, output could fall toward the low end of 170,000 ounces.
Price risks
- Another equipment failure at a remote Arctic site could take months to fix.
- A lower gold price would squeeze returns on the $51 million drilling budget.
Technical view
Price is trading below both its 20-period and 50-period moving averages, a bearish alignment.
