Bannerman's Etango Uranium Mine in Namibia Gets the Go-Ahead for Construction

Bannerman's Etango Uranium Mine in Namibia Gets the Go-Ahead for Construction

Bannerman Energy and its Chinese partner have approved construction of the Etango uranium mine in Namibia, with first production targeted for 2028. The mine is expected to produce about 3.5 million pounds of uranium oxide a year.

At a glance

  • Pre-production capital is about $353 million, and about $64 million has already been spent.
  • The rest is funded from the joint venture's own cash of about $295 million, with no debt.
  • Bannerman owns 55% of the project and China's CNNC Overseas owns 45%.

Background

Uranium oxide, often called U3O8 or yellowcake, is the concentrate that mines sell to make nuclear fuel. A final investment decision (FID) is the point at which a company commits to build a project in full. Namibia is already home to large uranium mines, and Bannerman Energy is an Australian-listed company that has spent more than two decades developing Etango.

What happened

The Etango joint venture took a positive final investment decision on the Etango uranium project in Namibia, Bannerman Energy said on October 23, Mining Weekly reported. Full-scale construction will start on site over the coming months, with commissioning and first production targeted for 2028.

The decision covers the Etango-8 design, which is forecast to produce about 3.5 million pounds of uranium oxide a year. Bannerman holds 55% of the venture and its Chinese partner, CNNC Overseas Limited (CNOL), holds 45%.

How it is funded

Pre-production capital spending is forecast at about $353 million, of which about $64 million has already been spent on early works. The remainder is covered by the joint venture's existing cash of about $295 million, so no debt is needed.

Bannerman's own share of working capital through construction and ramp-up is covered by its cash of about A$175 million. With construction "fully funded on a debt-free basis", Etango "is now set to become the next major greenfield uranium project globally to enter production," chief executive Gavin Chamberlain said.

What it means

Etango adds a new source of uranium from 2028. Bulk earthworks are largely complete and detailed design is well advanced, Bannerman said, which lowers the risk of delay. The company also named Danie van Aswegen, previously chief operating officer, as head of its Namibian operations.

Our read

Outlook: bearish. Etango will add about 3.5 million pounds of uranium a year, but not before 2028.

What to watch

  • The start of full-scale construction at Etango in the coming months.
  • Details of the offtake agreements for Etango's uranium.
  • Progress towards commissioning and first production in 2028.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-23: The Etango joint venture takes a final investment decision to build the mine.

Supply Drivers

Etango adds about 3.5 million pounds a year of new uranium supply from 2028.

Mining Production

Earthworks are largely complete, which reduces the risk of construction delays.

What could lift prices

  • Etango's uranium is not due until 2028, so near-term supply is unchanged.
  • Part of Etango's output is covered by a cornerstone offtake framework, so not all of it will reach the open market.

What could weigh on prices

  • A fully funded new mine adds about 3.5 million pounds a year of supply.
  • More approved projects reduce fears of a long-term uranium shortage.

Who gains, who loses

  • Bannerman Energy shareholders: The project is funded to production without new debt.
  • Rival uranium developers: Etango could reach production ahead of them and compete for the same buyers.

Other ways this could play out

  • If construction stays on schedule, Etango could start producing in 2028.
  • If costs rise beyond the $295 million in cash, the partners may need new funding.

Price risks

  • Uranium prices depend on utility contracting and large producers more than one new mine.
  • Delays at Etango would push its new supply further out.
