Bonterra Resources says its past-producing Barry gold mine in Quebec is worth C$665 million after tax under a bigger mine plan and a much higher gold price assumption, almost 14 times its 2022 estimate.
At a glance
- The plan targets about 697,000 ounces of gold over a 7.2-year mine life.
- The study assumes a long-term gold price of $3,500 an ounce, against $1,600 in 2022.
- Joint-venture partner Gold Fields has not endorsed the study.
Background
A preliminary economic assessment (PEA) is an early study of whether a mine could make money. Its key figure is net present value (NPV), today's value of the mine's future cash flows after costs. A PEA is not a decision to build, and later, more detailed studies often change its numbers.
What happened
Bonterra Resources said on October 14 that a new PEA gives its Barry gold project an after-tax NPV of C$665 million (US$465 million), using a 5% discount rate, The Northern Miner reported. The study shows an internal rate of return of 54% and a payback of 2.5 years. A 2022 study had valued Barry at C$48.3 million.
The new plan adds underground mining to an open pit. It targets nearly 697,000 ounces of gold over 7.2 years, or about 87,097 ounces a year. That is nearly three times the 30,000 ounces a year in the earlier open-pit-only plan.
Why the value jumped
A higher gold price assumption does much of the work. The study uses a long-term price of $3,500 an ounce, compared with $1,600 in 2022. It also draws on a resource estimate from February 2026 and includes deeper, higher-grade underground ore at 4.05 grams of gold per tonne.
The bigger plan costs more. Initial capital rises to C$119 million from C$22.1 million, and total capital over the mine's life is put at C$480 million. All-in sustaining costs, a broad measure of what it costs to produce each ounce, are estimated at C$3,017 an ounce. Ore would be trucked to a nearby third-party mill rather than a new plant.
What it means
Barry is a joint venture with Gold Fields, which can earn 70% of the project by spending C$30 million. Gold Fields has not endorsed the PEA, and Bonterra said the study is not a development decision. Barry produced about 44,000 ounces between 2008 and 2010.
ATB Cormark analyst Richard Gray said the deposit remains open at depth. He called that "meaningful exploration upside" for future updates. The market was unmoved, with Bonterra shares flat at 13 cents in Toronto, valuing the company at about C$50 million.
Our read
Outlook: neutral. A single development-stage study does not change global gold supply. It mainly shows how today's high prices are reviving older, smaller deposits.
What to watch
- Whether Gold Fields completes its spending to earn 70% of Barry.
- Further drilling below the current resource, where mineralisation extends more than 100 metres deeper.

Detailed analysis
Timeline
- 2026-10-14: Bonterra releases a new PEA valuing Barry at C$665 million after tax.
Supply Drivers
Higher gold prices are making older, lower-value deposits like Barry worth studying again.
Mining Production
Barry would add about 87,097 ounces a year if built, a small amount in global terms.
What could lift prices
- Projects like Barry are being revalued on gold price assumptions more than double those of 2022.
- An IRR of 54% shows strong returns at current price assumptions.
What could weigh on prices
- All-in sustaining costs of C$3,017 an ounce leave less margin if gold prices fall.
- New supply from revived projects could add to mine output over time.
Country impact
| Country | Impact | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Low | The project could restart gold mining at a past-producing site in Quebec. |
Industry impact
| Industry | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Mining | Positive | Higher gold prices are lifting the value of smaller development projects. |
Who gains, who loses
- Gold Fields: It can earn a 70% controlling stake in a project now valued far higher than in 2022.
- Bonterra shareholders: Their stake will shrink to 30% once Gold Fields earns its 70%.
Other ways this could play out
- If gold stays well above $3,500, Barry's value could rise further in later studies.
- If gold falls toward $3,000, the thin margin over costs could weaken the case for building.
Price risks
- A fall in the gold price would hit the project's economics hard.
- Cost inflation could push capital estimates higher in later studies.
Historical comparison
- 2022 PEA: The earlier study valued Barry at C$48.3 million at a $1,600 gold price, with 30,000 ounces a year.
Technical view
Price is trading below both its 20-period and 50-period moving averages, a bearish alignment.
