Colombia Signs Nine Copper, Gold and Phosphate Contracts From Its 2026 Mining Rounds

Colombia has signed nine special exploration and production contracts for copper, gold, polymetallic metals and phosphates from its 2026 mining rounds. The winners plan about 54 billion pesos, around US$17 million, of exploration, and Zijin Mining is among them.

At a glance

  • Eight of the contracts cover copper, gold and polymetallic blocks; one covers phosphate.
  • Zijin Mining won two blocks totalling 1,555 hectares in Buriticá.
  • The National Mining Agency also signed 35 draft titling contracts across 14 departments.

Background

Colombia has been trying to attract mining investment through competitive rounds in designated Strategic Mining Areas, where the state offers blocks to companies. Copper is a priority because demand for it is rising with electrification.

What happened

Colombia signed nine special mining exploration and production contracts in its 2026 mining rounds, BNamericas reported on October 12. The blocks lie in Strategic Mining Areas in Cesar, La Guajira, Antioquia, Tolima and Huila.

The companies plan investment of around 54 billion pesos, about US$17 million, for exploration. Eight contracts came from the Copper, Gold and Polymetallic Round and one from the Phosphate Round.

Who won what

In copper, Mineros Aluvial won blocks 17 and 18, totalling 2,624 hectares, and Libero Cobre won block 39 in Tolima, covering 1,615 hectares. Zijin Mining won blocks 23 and 42 in Buriticá, totalling 1,555 hectares.

OP Gold Capital won blocks 2 and 3 in Cesar, totalling 6,046 hectares, and Carbones San Cayetano won block 5 in La Guajira. The phosphate block in Yaguará, Huila, went to Fosfatos del Huila.

What it means

Alongside the contracts, the National Mining Agency (ANM) signed 35 draft titling contracts in 32 municipalities across 14 departments. The awards give Colombia new exploration activity in copper and gold, though the planned spending is modest and any mine would be years away.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Early-stage exploration contracts do not affect copper or gold supply for years.

What to watch

  • Exploration results from the newly awarded copper blocks.
  • Whether Colombia runs further mining rounds.
  • Zijin's plans for its new Buriticá blocks.

What could lift prices

  • New exploration could eventually add copper supply.
  • The rounds show Colombia actively opening areas to mining.

What could weigh on prices

  • Planned exploration spending of about US$17 million is small.
  • Any production is years away.

Other ways this could play out

  • If exploration finds economic deposits, the blocks could move to production.
  • If results disappoint, the contracts may lapse without new mines.

Price risks

  • Copper prices depend on global supply, not early-stage exploration.
  • Security and permitting risks have slowed mining projects in Colombia.
