Landslide at an Illegal Gold Mine in Colombia's Nariño Kills 14 People

Landslide at an Illegal Gold Mine in Colombia's Nariño Kills 14 People

A landslide at an informal gold mine in Colombia's southwestern Nariño department killed 14 people and injured seven on Monday, after heavy rain. It is the second deadly mining accident in Nariño in two months.

At a glance

  • The mine was in a rural area of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé municipality.
  • Rescue teams struggled to reach the site because of rough terrain and criminal groups.
  • A similar accident in Policarpa, also in Nariño, killed 13 workers in August.

Background

Informal and unregulated gold mining is common in rural Colombia, especially in remote areas where few other jobs exist. Nariño, on the border with Ecuador, is a hotspot. Armed groups there control much of the clandestine gold trade, along with drug trafficking and extortion.

What happened

A landslide struck an informal gold mine on Monday morning in a rural area of Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé, Xinhua reported. It followed heavy rains. "The death toll stands at 14, unfortunately," said Gabriel Ocaña, administrative director of disaster risk management at the Nariño governor's office. Seven people were injured.

Alex González, Nariño's peace and security secretary, told Caracol television that the search for survivors had ended, Euronews reported, citing AFP.

Why rescuers struggled

The governor's office said rescue teams had trouble reaching the site because of difficult terrain and the presence of criminal groups. Colombia's National Mining Agency said its technical team was delayed by access difficulties and public order conditions in the area.

"Communities have no other economic alternatives than these extremely risky activities," a source in the governor's office told AFP. The source said traditional small-scale mining has practically disappeared in the region.

What it means

The accident comes two months after a slope collapse at an unlicensed mine in Policarpa, also in Nariño, killed 13 workers and injured seven. Repeated disasters at unregulated sites, where armed groups control the gold trade, show the human cost behind part of the world's gold supply. They also make it harder for buyers to trace where gold comes from.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. A tragedy at a small informal mine does not affect global gold supply or prices.

What to watch

  • Any government action against informal mining in Nariño after a second deadly accident in two months.
  • Whether the official death toll changes as authorities reach the site.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-19: Landslide at an informal gold mine in Santa Bárbara de Iscuandé kills 14.

Government Policies

Repeated deaths at unregulated sites put pressure on Colombia to tackle informal mining.

Geopolitical Risks

Armed groups control the clandestine gold trade in Nariño, hampering rescues and oversight.

What could lift prices

  • Tighter action against informal mining could reduce small volumes of untraced gold.
  • Growing scrutiny of illegal gold may raise sourcing costs for some buyers.

What could weigh on prices

  • A local mine accident has no measurable effect on global gold supply.
  • Informal mining tends to continue where there are few other jobs.

Industry impact

IndustryEffectReason
Gold MiningNegativeDeadly accidents at informal mines add to scrutiny of gold supply chains.

Who gains, who loses

  • Responsible gold producers: Traceable, regulated supply looks more valuable as scrutiny of illegal gold rises.
  • Mining communities in Nariño: They face deadly risks with few other ways to earn a living.

Other ways this could play out

  • If authorities step up enforcement, informal mining in Nariño could shrink, at least for a time.
  • If nothing changes, more accidents at unregulated sites are likely.

Price risks

  • Global gold prices are driven by central banks and interest rates, not local accidents.
  • Tighter rules on gold sourcing could add costs for refiners.

Historical comparison

  • August 2026: A slope collapse at an unlicensed mine in Policarpa, Nariño, killed 13 workers and injured seven.
