Kenya's Equity Says Its Congo Unit Can Arrange Mining Loans of Nearly $700 Million

Kenya's Equity Says Its Congo Unit Can Arrange Mining Loans of Nearly $700 Million

EquityBCDC, the Democratic Republic of Congo unit of Kenya's Equity Group, says it can arrange loans approaching $700 million by drawing on its parent's regional network. Mining is a major part of its loan book as copper prices trade near records.

At a glance

  • Congolese central bank rules let EquityBCDC lend about $180 million on its own.
  • Some of its mining loans have exceeded $100 million.
  • Its profit rose 32% last year to $160.5 million.

Background

Congo is the world's second-largest copper producer and its biggest source of cobalt. Mining companies there have often relied on foreign lenders, so growing local and regional bank capacity could change how projects are financed.

What happened

EquityBCDC can arrange loans approaching $700 million by drawing on Equity Group's regional network, and could raise more through syndicated loans, managing director Willy Mulamba told Bloomberg, Miningmx reported.

"We have many clients that we've been supporting, particularly in the mining sector," Mulamba said, adding that some loans had exceeded $100 million.

The limits

Under Congolese central bank rules, EquityBCDC can lend about $180 million on its own. Larger deals would need support from Equity Group's wider operations or lender syndicates. Mulamba said governance in Congo's mining industry is improving.

What it means

The bank is also trying to grow beyond mining by lending more to small and medium-sized businesses. It is targeting 30 million customers by 2030, largely through digital banking, and has 10,000 to 12,000 banking agents across Congo.

EquityBCDC handles salary payments for almost 300,000 civil servants. Its profit rose 32% last year to $160.5 million, and Mulamba expects similar growth this year.

More than 90% of bank deposits and 97% of loans in Congo are in dollars. Mulamba said central bank plans to encourage use of Congolese francs could help broaden banking access.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Bank lending capacity affects how mines are financed, not copper prices.

What to watch

  • Large mining loans arranged by EquityBCDC.
  • Changes to Congolese central bank lending rules.
  • Copper prices, which support miners' borrowing.
