Chinese battery materials group Huayou Cobalt has taken over Elevra Lithium's rights in the Ewoyaa lithium project in Ghana. It now holds 22.5% and will pay the next $66 million of development costs to raise its share to 50%.
At a glance
- Ghana's Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources raised no objection to Huayou taking control of the stake.
- Huayou also takes over Elevra's right to buy spodumene concentrate from the mine.
- After the $66 million is spent, Atlantic Lithium and Huayou will share costs equally.
Background
Ewoyaa, run by Atlantic Lithium, is set to be Ghana's first lithium mine. It would produce spodumene concentrate, a lithium-rich mineral that refiners turn into chemicals for electric vehicle batteries. Ghana's parliament ratified the project's mining lease in March 2026.
What happened
Atlantic Lithium said on October 26 that the transfer of Elevra Lithium's rights in its Ghana lithium projects to Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt is complete. The deal closed after Ghana's Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources said it had no objection to Huayou becoming a controller of the companies that hold the projects.
Huayou now holds the rights to a 22.5% interest in the Ghana portfolio, which includes Ewoyaa. It also takes over Elevra's right to buy the mine's spodumene concentrate.
Who pays for the mine
Huayou will pay all of the project's development costs up to $66 million, the amount left of a $70 million sole-funding commitment. In return it will earn a further 27.5%, taking its share to 50%.
After that, Atlantic Lithium and Huayou will split costs equally. Huayou has also agreed to treat the funding conditions in the project agreement as met or waived.
What it means
The deal gives Ewoyaa a large, well-funded partner at the stage when it needs money to build. "Its involvement provides a strong platform from which to advance Ewoyaa and further de-risks the project's pathway towards development," Atlantic Lithium chief executive Keith Muller said of Huayou.
Our read
Outlook: neutral. The deal moves a project towards construction, but it is too small and too far from production to affect lithium prices now.
What to watch
- When construction starts at Ewoyaa now that funding is in place.
- How quickly Huayou spends the $66 million it has committed.
- Lithium prices, which will decide how profitable the mine can be.

Detailed analysis
Timeline
- 2026-05-11: Atlantic Lithium consents to the transfer of Elevra's Ewoyaa rights to Huayou.
- 2026-10-26: Atlantic Lithium announces the transfer is complete after Ghana's approval.
Supply Drivers
Funding is now in place to develop Ewoyaa, set to be Ghana's first lithium mine.
What could lift prices
- Chinese buyers are still investing to secure future lithium supply.
- Huayou takes the offtake rights, so the concentrate already has a buyer.
What could weigh on prices
- New mines such as Ewoyaa will add to global lithium supply once they start.
- Huayou now funds Ewoyaa alone until its $66 million is spent.
Country impact
| Country | Impact | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Ghana | Medium | Its first lithium mine now has a funded partner to pay for development. |
| China | Low | A Chinese company gains a share of future African lithium supply. |
Industry impact
| Industry | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lithium Mining | Positive | A key funding step is complete for a new lithium project. |
| EV Battery Manufacturing | Neutral | Supply from Ewoyaa is still years from reaching battery makers. |
Who gains, who loses
- Atlantic Lithium: Huayou pays the next $66 million of development costs on its own.
- Huayou Cobalt: It secures a share of the mine and the right to buy its concentrate.
- Elevra Lithium: It has handed its Ewoyaa stake and offtake rights to Huayou and is no longer part of the project.
Other ways this could play out
- If construction starts soon, Ewoyaa could become Ghana's first lithium producer.
- If lithium prices stay weak, the partners could slow spending on the project.
Price risks
- Ewoyaa is not yet producing, so it adds nothing to supply today.
- Any delay to construction would push its supply further out.
Technical view
Price is trading below both its 20-period and 50-period moving averages, a bearish alignment.
