Hycroft Drills Its Highest Gold Grades Yet at the Vortex Zone of Its Nevada Mine

Hycroft Drills Its Highest Gold Grades Yet at the Vortex Zone of Its Nevada Mine

Hycroft Mining drilled its highest gold grades yet at its Nevada mine, cutting 19.6 metres of 30.49 grams of gold per tonne, as it studies whether an underground mine could start before a larger open pit.

At a glance

  • The hole also returned 1,726.72 grams of silver per tonne over the same 19.6 metres.
  • A shorter 1.7-metre section graded 347.07 grams of gold per tonne, though its true width was not given.
  • Hycroft shares fell 7.2% to $16.30 on Wednesday despite the result.

Background

Hycroft Mining owns a former heap-leach gold and silver mine about 210 km northeast of Carson City, Nevada. Drill grades are reported in grams per tonne, and exceptionally rich results are often called bonanza grades. A drill intercept shows what one hole found, not how much ore can be mined economically.

What happened

Hole H26D-6175A cut 19.6 metres grading 30.49 grams of gold and 1,726.72 grams of silver per tonne from 416.5 metres down at the Vortex zone, the company reported on Tuesday. It included 1.7 metres grading 347.07 grams of gold, where visible gold was seen in the core.

"The combination of higher grades and longer intercepts suggests we may be getting close to a potential source of the Vortex system," CEO Diane Garrett said. Follow-up drilling is under way.

Why it matters

Hycroft is studying whether to mine the high-grade Vortex and Brimstone zones underground before a much larger open-pit milling project. Those high-grade zones hold measured and indicated resources of 90.2 million ounces of silver and 299,000 ounces of gold, according to a January estimate.

Consultancy Respec is developing a conceptual underground mine plan, and Hatch is evaluating processing options. The company has not yet established the economics of an underground operation.

What it means

BMO Capital Markets analyst Brian Quast estimated a $3.4 billion construction cost for the broader milling project in a September note. He models construction starting in 2029 and first production in 2031.

Investors were cautious. Hycroft's shares fell 7.2% to $16.30 on Wednesday. The company held $221 million in cash and no debt at June 30.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. An exploration result at one mine does not change gold supply, so it has no effect on prices.

What to watch

  • Results from follow-up drilling at Vortex.
  • A decision on restarting heap leaching, which BMO says could come by year-end.
  • The conceptual underground mine plan from Respec.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-13: Hycroft reports 19.6 metres of 30.49 g/t gold at Vortex.

Supply Drivers

Vortex and Brimstone's high-grade zones hold 299,000 ounces of gold and 90.2 million ounces of silver in measured and indicated resources.

Mining Production

Hycroft is studying underground mining of high-grade zones ahead of a larger open pit.

What could lift prices

  • High-grade silver in the same hole adds to the project's value.
  • Strong precious metal prices make high-grade discoveries more attractive.

What could weigh on prices

  • The underground economics have not been established.
  • The larger milling project would cost an estimated $3.4 billion.

Country impact

Who gains, who loses

  • Hycroft: Higher grades improve the case for an underground mine.
  • Short-term traders: The shares fell 7.2% despite the result.

Other ways this could play out

  • If follow-up drilling confirms the extension, Hycroft could move faster on an underground plan.
  • If studies show weak economics, the project may wait for the larger milling development.

Price risks

  • Drill results may not translate into a mineable resource.
  • Financing a multi-billion-dollar project is a major hurdle.
