Lake Resources Wins Environmental Approval for Its Kachi Lithium Project in Argentina

Lake Resources Wins Environmental Approval for Its Kachi Lithium Project in Argentina

Australian developer Lake Resources has received the main environmental permit for its Kachi lithium project in Argentina. The project can now move into detailed engineering, the last step before a decision on whether to build it.

At a glance

  • Catamarca province's mining ministry issued Kachi's Environmental Impact Declaration, the project's main environmental permit.
  • The first phase is designed to produce 25,000 tonnes a year of lithium carbonate equivalent, with a second phase planned at 50,000 tonnes.
  • Kachi uses direct lithium extraction and returns more than 95% of processed brine underground instead of using evaporation ponds.

Background

Much of the world's lithium comes from salty underground water, called brine, in the high deserts of Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. Traditionally, brine is pumped into huge ponds and left to evaporate for months. Direct lithium extraction (DLE) pulls lithium out of the brine in a plant instead, which is faster and uses far less land, but it is still new at commercial scale.

What happened

Lake Resources said on September 29 that Catamarca province's mining ministry has issued an Environmental Impact Declaration for its Kachi lithium brine project. Catamarca sits in South America's so-called Lithium Triangle. The permit confirms that Kachi's design and resource plans meet provincial and national environmental and social standards.

"It moves Kachi into fully permitted status, making the project shovel-ready," managing director David Dickson said. Lake says that makes Kachi one of the few large, independent greenfield lithium brine projects worldwide to reach this stage. It has also committed $1 million to Catamarca's mining royalty trust fund for local infrastructure.

What the approval requires

The permit sets a 200-metre exclusion zone around the shoreline of a nearby lagoon to keep project work away from its ecosystem. It also sets obligations that Lake must meet before commercial production starts.

Kachi's design avoids evaporation ponds. It uses Lilac Solutions' direct extraction technology and returns more than 95% of processed brine to the aquifer. The first phase targets 25,000 tonnes a year of lithium carbonate equivalent, with 50,000 tonnes planned in a second phase. Lake says the plant can make battery-grade lithium carbonate above 99.5% purity without further refining.

What comes next

Kachi now enters front-end engineering and design, known as FEED. This stage firms up engineering, orders long-lead equipment and prepares documents for export credit agencies and strategic investors. It is the last engineering step before a final investment decision.

Kachi is a $1.16 billion project, so raising the money is the next big hurdle. That will not be easy after lithium prices fell sharply from their May peak this year.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Kachi is still years from production and not yet funded, so it does not change near-term lithium supply. It adds to the pipeline of future Argentine output.

What to watch

  • Progress on FEED and any timeline for a final investment decision.
  • Financing talks with export credit agencies and strategic equity partners.
  • Lithium carbonate prices, which will shape how easily the project can be funded.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-09-29: Lake Resources announces environmental approval for Kachi and moves to the FEED stage.

Supply Drivers

Kachi would add 25,000 tonnes a year of lithium carbonate equivalent in its first phase, but only after financing and construction.

Government Policies

Catamarca's permit adds a 200-metre lagoon exclusion zone and pre-production obligations to the project.

What could lift prices

  • Kachi is one of only a few large, independent greenfield brine projects worldwide to be fully permitted.
  • Direct extraction with brine reinjection may ease environmental objections that slow other projects.

What could weigh on prices

  • Another permitted Argentine project adds to future supply if lithium demand disappoints.
  • Lower lithium prices this year make it harder to finance a $1.16 billion project.

Who gains, who loses

  • Lake Resources shareholders: The approval removes a major permitting risk before the funding decision.
  • Catamarca province: It receives $1 million for local infrastructure and a path to new investment.
  • Competing brine developers without permits: Kachi moves ahead of them in the race for financing and offtake deals.

Other ways this could play out

  • If FEED goes smoothly and funding is secured, Kachi could reach a final investment decision and start construction.
  • If lithium prices stay weak, financing could stall and leave the permitted project on hold.

Price risks

  • A wave of newly permitted projects could weigh on longer-term lithium price expectations.
  • Technical problems scaling direct extraction could delay supply from Kachi.
