McEwen Sells Two Timmins Gold Properties to Discovery Mining for $55 Million

Outlook: Neutral · October 10, 2026
McEwen Sells Two Timmins Gold Properties to Discovery Mining for $55 Million

McEwen has agreed to sell two gold properties in Timmins, Ontario, to Discovery Mining for $55 million, mostly in Discovery shares. Discovery wants the land next to its Dome mine for possible new processing and tailings facilities.

At a glance

  • Discovery will pay $5 million in cash and $50 million in its own shares.
  • The deal covers McEwen's Fuller property and its 60% interest in the Paymaster joint venture.
  • Franco-Nevada will pay Discovery $8 million to extend its royalty to the purchased land.

Background

Timmins, in northern Ontario, is one of Canada's oldest gold mining camps. The Dome mine there is now owned by Discovery Mining. A royalty is a right to a share of a mine's future output or revenue, usually bought with an upfront payment. Franco-Nevada is a major mining royalty company.

What happened

Discovery Mining said on October 9 that it will buy McEwen's Fuller project and McEwen's 60% interest in the Paymaster joint venture in Timmins. The land sits next to Discovery's Dome mine. Discovery will pay $5 million in cash at closing and $50 million in its own shares.

Franco-Nevada will pay Discovery $8 million at closing. In return, its existing royalty on Discovery's Porcupine operations will be extended to cover the newly acquired land. The deal is expected to close in October, subject to approvals including the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Why each side wants it

For Discovery, the land is about space. "The land being acquired ... provides an ideal location for potential new processing and tailings facilities to support large-scale production from our Dome Mine," said chief executive Tony Makuch.

For McEwen, the properties were non-core. The company is directing capital toward its target of 250,000 to 300,000 gold-equivalent ounces a year by 2030. McEwen's shares rose 4.5% on the news.

What it means

Because most of the price is paid in shares, McEwen keeps an indirect stake in the Timmins camp through Discovery. Discovery, in turn, gains room to grow at Dome without spending much cash, and Franco-Nevada's payment more than covers the cash portion of the deal.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. The sale moves exploration land between companies and does not change gold supply. It has no effect on gold prices.

What to watch

  • Closing of the deal, expected in October, and the TSX approval for the share payment.
  • Discovery's plans for new processing and tailings facilities at Dome.
  • How McEwen uses the proceeds toward its 2030 production target.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-09: Discovery Mining agrees to buy McEwen's Fuller and Paymaster interests for $55 million.

Supply Drivers

McEwen is focusing spending on reaching 250,000 to 300,000 gold-equivalent ounces a year by 2030.

Mining Production

The land could host new processing and tailings facilities to support larger production at Dome.

What could lift prices

  • Miners are paying for land to expand production, a sign of confidence in gold.
  • Royalty companies like Franco-Nevada are still putting money into gold assets.

What could weigh on prices

  • Larger future production at Dome would add to gold supply over time.
  • The deal itself moves land between owners and adds no near-term supply.

Country impact

Industry impact

IndustryEffectReason
Gold MiningPositiveThe deal frees capital for McEwen and gives Discovery room to expand.

Who gains, who loses

  • Discovery Mining: It gains land beside Dome mainly for shares, with Franco-Nevada funding the cash part.
  • McEwen: It monetises non-core land while keeping exposure through Discovery shares.
  • Existing Discovery shareholders: Issuing $50 million of new shares dilutes their stakes.

Other ways this could play out

  • If Discovery builds new facilities on the land, Dome could support much larger production.
  • If Discovery shares fall before closing, McEwen would receive less value than the headline $55 million.

Price risks

  • Gold prices depend on global factors such as interest rates, not on land deals in Timmins.
  • Any supply effect from a larger Dome mine is years away.
