Metro Mining Reviews Its 2026 Bauxite Guidance After a Sand Bank Blocks Its Channel

Metro Mining Reviews Its 2026 Bauxite Guidance After a Sand Bank Blocks Its Channel

Australian bauxite producer Metro Mining is reviewing its 2026 shipment guidance after a sand-bank collapse cut the depth of its barging channel and staff shortages slowed its Bauxite Hills mine. It shipped 659,000 tonnes in September, taking the year to date to 4.013 million tonnes.

At a glance

  • The collapse cut the channel's depth from 1.8 metres to 1.3 metres in September.
  • Maintenance that began in early October should restore normal depth within two weeks.
  • The company has not yet announced a revised shipment target.

Background

Bauxite is the ore that alumina is refined from, and alumina is then smelted into aluminium. Metro Mining's Bauxite Hills mine, on Cape York in Far North Queensland, barges ore down the Skardon River to a floating terminal that loads ocean-going ships.

What happened

In an operational update dated October 12, Metro Mining said a sand-bank collapse in September cut its barging channel from 1.8 metres deep to 1.3 metres. That limited how much bauxite it could move. Staff absenteeism and turnover also stopped it from fully using its equipment as the mine plan required more stripping.

The company shipped 659,000 tonnes in September, bringing year-to-date shipments to 4.013 million tonnes. It said it would update its calendar-year guidance as soon as possible, if required.

The fix

A planned channel maintenance campaign began in the first week of October and is expected to restore the channel to its approved depth within two weeks. Metro is also working on feasibility studies with Ports North, the government-owned port manager, towards a possible dredging programme.

Its offshore loading is performing well. The Ikamba floating terminal is loading at about 2,400 tonnes an hour, above target, and a floating crane returned from dry dock in September.

What it means

Until the guidance review is done, it is not clear how much the disruption will cut full-year shipments. Metro owns Bauxite Hills outright, so the shortfall falls fully on the company.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Metro is a small bauxite exporter, and a short disruption does not move aluminium prices.

What to watch

  • Metro's revised 2026 shipment guidance.
  • Whether the channel is back to normal depth by late October.
  • Progress on the dredging studies with Ports North.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-09: A sand-bank collapse cuts the barging channel to 1.3 metres.
  • 2026-10: Channel maintenance begins in the first week of the month.
  • 2026-10-12: Metro says it is reviewing its 2026 guidance.

Supply Drivers

A shallower barging channel and staff shortages cut bauxite shipments from Bauxite Hills.

Mining Production

Metro shipped 4.013 million tonnes of bauxite in the first nine months of 2026.

What could lift prices

  • The floating terminal is loading above its target rate.
  • Channel maintenance is already under way.

What could weigh on prices

  • Full-year shipments could fall short of guidance.
  • Workforce shortages are an ongoing problem.

Who gains, who loses

  • Metro Mining: It may have to cut its full-year shipment guidance.

Other ways this could play out

  • If the channel is restored quickly, Metro may recover much of the lost volume.
  • If staffing problems persist, guidance is likely to be cut.

Price risks

  • Bauxite and alumina prices are set mainly by Guinea, Australia's big producers and China.
  • Wet-season weather could disrupt barging again.
