An updated preliminary study values Moon River Moly's Davidson project in British Columbia at C$1.23 billion after tax, up 20%. A switch to flotation more than quadruples planned tungsten output and cuts the payback period to 1.5 years.
At a glance
- Davidson's after-tax net present value rose to C$1.23 billion from C$1.03 billion in the December 2025 study.
- Planned tungsten output jumps to 1.51 million pounds a year from 334,000 pounds.
- Moon River plans a pre-feasibility study in the first half of 2027.
Background
Molybdenum is a metal mostly added to steel to make it stronger and more resistant to heat and corrosion. A preliminary economic assessment (PEA) is an early study that estimates whether a mine could make money. Net present value (NPV) is today's value of a mine's expected future cash flows, here discounted at 8% a year.
What happened
Moon River Moly said on Thursday that an updated PEA puts the after-tax NPV of its Davidson molybdenum-copper-tungsten project at C$1.23 billion ($879 million). That is about 20% higher than the C$1.03 billion estimated in December 2025. The after-tax internal rate of return rises to 33% from 32%.
The project near Smithers, British Columbia, would process 10,000 tonnes of ore a day for 20 years. It would produce on average 13.27 million pounds of molybdenum, 1.5 million pounds of copper and 1.51 million pounds of tungsten trioxide a year.
Why the value rose
The main change is a switch from gravity separation to flotation to recover tungsten. That lifts planned tungsten output from 334,000 pounds a year and turns it into a larger by-product credit. All-in sustaining costs fall to $4.36 a pound of molybdenum, net of copper and tungsten credits, from $7.65.
Higher credits shorten the expected payback to 1.5 years from 2.3 years, even though initial capital costs rise to C$750.1 million from C$672.3 million. Atrium Research analyst Ben Pirie said the changes make Davidson much more financeable.
What it means
Davidson remains an early-stage project with no mineral reserves, and the study assumes long-term molybdenum at $23.41 a pound. At September 2026 average metal prices, the after-tax NPV would be C$3 billion. Moon River aims to start a pre-feasibility study in the first half of 2027 and has begun baseline environmental work with First Nations.
Our read
Outlook: neutral. Davidson is years from production and has no reserves, so the study does not change near-term molybdenum supply.
What to watch
- The start of the pre-feasibility study planned for the first half of 2027.
- Talks with First Nations on the project's impacts and economic opportunities.
- Progress on the potential restart of the nearby Endako molybdenum mine, in which Moon River holds 25%.

Detailed analysis
Timeline
- 2026-10-22: Moon River Moly releases an updated preliminary economic assessment for Davidson.
Supply Drivers
Larger tungsten and copper by-product credits cut Davidson's net molybdenum cost to $4.36 a pound in the study.
Mining Production
The plan would add 13.27 million pounds of molybdenum a year from an underground mine in British Columbia, if built.
What could lift prices
- Davidson still needs a pre-feasibility study and permits, so it adds no molybdenum supply in the near term.
- The nearby Endako molybdenum mine has been shut since 2014 and is only being evaluated for a restart.
What could weigh on prices
- If built, Davidson would add 13.27 million pounds of molybdenum a year to supply.
- Cheaper tungsten recovery lowers the project's net cost, letting it produce profitably even at lower molybdenum prices.
Country impact
| Country | Impact | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Low | A future underground mine near Smithers would add a domestic source of molybdenum and tungsten. |
Industry impact
| Industry | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Mining Exploration | Positive | Better study results strengthen the case for funding Davidson's next stage of work. |
Who gains, who loses
- Moon River Moly shareholders: A higher project value and shorter payback improve the case for financing the mine.
- Moon River Moly: Initial capital costs rose by about C$78 million, so the company must raise more money to build.
Other ways this could play out
- If metal prices stay near September 2026 levels, the project's after-tax value could approach C$3 billion.
- If permitting or First Nations talks take longer, the pre-feasibility study planned for 2027 could slip.
Price risks
- A sharp fall in molybdenum prices would weaken Davidson's economics despite the by-product credits.
- Further cost increases at the pre-feasibility stage could erode the gains in this study.
Technical view
Price is trading below both its 20-period and 50-period moving averages, a bearish alignment.
