New Found Gold's updated study puts the value of its Queensway gold project in Newfoundland at C$1.73 billion, more than double last year's estimate. Much of the rise comes from assuming a gold price of $3,600 an ounce instead of $2,500.
At a glance
- Measured and indicated resources rose 38% to 1.92 million ounces of gold.
- Queensway is planned to produce an average of 116,000 ounces a year for 15 years, starting in late 2027.
- The project still needs environmental clearance and other permits.
Background
A preliminary economic assessment (PEA) is an early study of whether a mine could be profitable. It is less detailed than a feasibility study, and it can include lower-confidence resources. Net present value (NPV) is the project's estimated worth today, and it rises sharply when the study assumes a higher gold price. New Found Gold also runs the small Hammerdown mine in Newfoundland, which started commercial production in August.
What happened
New Found Gold's revised PEA gives Queensway an after-tax NPV of C$1.73 billion, up from C$743 million in last year's study, the company said on October 22, The Northern Miner reported. The new study assumes gold at $3,600 an ounce, 44% higher than the earlier $2,500, so the two figures cannot be compared directly.
Measured and indicated resources rose 38% to 1.92 million ounces, helped by a new zone called Dropkick. Shares rose 3% to C$2.27 in Toronto on Friday morning.
The mine plan
The plan calls for 1.74 million ounces of gold over 15 years, an average of 116,000 ounces a year, peaking at 190,000 ounces in 2032. All-in sustaining costs are put at $1,375 an ounce, and the initial investment at about C$150 million.
Ore from the Keats and Iceberg open pits will first be trucked to New Found's Pine Cove plant, with processing due to start in late 2027. Underground mining would begin in 2030 and a new plant at Queensway in 2031.
What still has to happen
Queensway still needs environmental clearance and later permits. Beyond the initial spending, the study includes C$832.1 million of growth capital, which New Found expects to fund from cash flow at the assumed gold price. The company had about C$167 million in cash and C$70 million of debt at the end of September.
Our read
Outlook: neutral. A study for a mid-sized mine that has not yet been permitted does not affect gold prices.
What to watch
- Environmental clearance for the Queensway open pits.
- The start of processing at Pine Cove, planned for late 2027.
- New Found Gold's third-quarter results on November 11.

- 2026-11-11: Third-quarter financial results are due.
Supply Drivers
Queensway could add an average of 116,000 ounces a year of new gold supply from late 2027.
Mining Production
Underground mining would start in 2030, earlier than in last year's plan.
What could lift prices
- Queensway still needs permits, so its new supply is not certain.
- No gold from Queensway is due before late 2027.
What could weigh on prices
- Higher assumed prices are bringing more new gold mines into development.
- Queensway could add 116,000 ounces a year from late 2027.
Country impact
| Country | Impact | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Low | A new gold mine in central Newfoundland moves closer to production. |
Industry impact
| Industry | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Mining | Positive | Higher gold prices are lifting the value of undeveloped gold projects. |
Who gains, who loses
- New Found Gold shareholders: The study shows much higher project value, and the shares rose 3%.
- New Found Gold, if gold falls: The valuation depends on a $3,600 gold price assumption.
Other ways this could play out
- If gold stays above $3,600, cash flow could fund the C$832 million expansion as planned.
- If gold falls well below the study price, later expansion stages may need outside funding.
Price risks
- Gold prices depend on interest rates and central banks, not new mine studies.
- Permitting delays could push back Queensway's start.
Historical comparison
- 2025 PEA: Last year's study valued Queensway at C$743 million using a $2,500 gold price.
