Paladin's Uranium Output Falls 19% at Langer Heinrich, but It Keeps Its Guidance

Paladin's Uranium Output Falls 19% at Langer Heinrich, but It Keeps Its Guidance

Paladin Energy's uranium output at Langer Heinrich in Namibia fell 19% to 1 million pounds in the September quarter after a planned shutdown, but the company kept its full-year production guidance.

At a glance

  • Production costs rose to $61.60 a pound from $51.60 in the June quarter.
  • The average realised uranium price climbed to $79.40 a pound from $70.60.
  • Paladin kept its FY2027 guidance of 5.1 million to 5.6 million pounds.

Background

Paladin Energy is an Australian uranium producer that owns 75% of the Langer Heinrich mine in Namibia. Uranium is sold as uranium oxide, or U3O8, and priced in US dollars per pound. Paladin's financial year runs from July to June, so the September quarter is the first of its FY2027.

What happened

Langer Heinrich produced 1 million pounds of uranium oxide in the three months to September 30, down from 1.23 million pounds in the previous quarter. Production costs rose to $61.60 a pound from $51.60, the company reported.

Sales fell to 1.16 million pounds from 1.35 million. But the average realised price rose about 12% to $79.40 a pound, helped by higher uranium prices and more sales linked to market prices.

Why output fell

Paladin blamed a planned maintenance shutdown and the characteristics of ore in the current mining sequence. Plant recovery slipped to 85% from 90%, and low starting inventories inside the processing circuit also cut output.

Lower production pushed up costs per pound. Paladin said throughput improved in September as mining advanced through the J pit, and it expects better grades and recovery in the pit's lower southern benches.

What comes next

"We expect production to increase in the second half of FY2027 and we remain on track to deliver our FY2027 guidance," chief executive Paul Hemburrow said. Guidance stays at 5.1 million to 5.6 million pounds, with costs of $44 to $48 a pound.

In Canada, Paladin signed a protocol with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission targeting construction licence hearings for its Patterson Lake South project by the end of 2027. Its shares fell 7.47% to A$7.43 in Sydney on Wednesday.

Our read

Outlook: bullish. Lower output from a major new mine tightens near-term supply slightly. Paladin's unchanged guidance limits the effect.

What to watch

  • Whether Langer Heinrich's output rises in the December quarter as the J pit deepens.
  • Plant recovery rates returning towards 90%.
  • Uranium price trends, which lift Paladin's market-linked sales.

Supply Drivers

Plant recovery dropped to 85% from 90%, pushing costs up to $61.60 a pound.

Mining Production

Langer Heinrich output fell 19% to 1 million pounds after a maintenance shutdown.

What could lift prices

  • Paladin's realised price rose 12% to $79.40 a pound.
  • Lower output from a major mine tightens near-term supply.

What could weigh on prices

  • Paladin expects production to rise in the second half.
  • Higher output elsewhere could offset Langer Heinrich's dip.

Who gains, who loses

  • Uranium holders: Higher realised prices show firm market conditions.
  • Paladin shareholders: The shares fell 7.47% after the report.

Other ways this could play out

  • If recovery improves in the J pit, output could rise sharply in the second half.
  • If ore problems persist, Paladin could struggle to reach its guidance.

Price risks

  • Further processing problems at Langer Heinrich.
  • A fall in uranium prices would cut market-linked sales revenue.
