Serabi Gold Cuts Its 2026 Output Forecast by About 17% as Brazil Permits Stall

Outlook: Neutral · October 23, 2026
Serabi Gold Cuts Its 2026 Output Forecast by About 17% as Brazil Permits Stall

Serabi Gold cut its 2026 production outlook by about 17% because permit delays stopped it moving more ore from its Coringa mine in Brazil to its expanded processing plant. Its shares fell 13% in Toronto.

At a glance

  • Serabi now expects output close to last year's 44,169 ounces, not the more than 53,000 it had guided.
  • Coringa's trial licence caps ore shipments at 100,000 tonnes a year, and 85,602 tonnes had already been moved by September 30.
  • The final missing approval is from Funai, Brazil's federal Indigenous affairs agency.

Background

Serabi Gold is a small gold producer listed in Toronto and London. It runs two mines in the Tapajós region of Brazil's Pará state: Palito, which has the processing plant, and Coringa, whose ore is sorted on site and trucked to Palito. Coringa still operates under a trial mining licence while Serabi seeks a full operating licence.

What happened

Serabi Gold now expects 2026 production close to last year's 44,169 ounces, down from earlier guidance of more than 53,000 ounces, The Northern Miner reported on October 22. The company said permit delays blocked a planned increase in ore from its Coringa mine.

Investors reacted sharply. Serabi's shares fell 13% to C$3.70 in Toronto on Wednesday, giving the company a market value of about C$282 million.

Why the permits matter

Coringa's trial licence lets Serabi truck up to 100,000 tonnes of ore a year to the Palito plant. By September 30 it had already shipped 85,602 tonnes, so it cannot send its extra stockpiled ore until it gets a higher limit or a full operating licence. "These approvals would have enabled us to process additional Coringa material through the expanded Palito plant in the fourth quarter," chief executive Mike Hodgson said.

The operating licence needs land-use approvals and sign-off on an Indigenous impact study by Funai, the federal Indigenous affairs agency. Both Indigenous groups involved have approved the study, but Funai has not. The trial licence expires on January 29, and Serabi is seeking an extension through Brazil's National Mining Agency.

Spare capacity, limited ore

The delay leaves Serabi with a bigger plant than it can fill. It has raised Palito's capacity from 650 tonnes a day to more than 900, with a fourth ball mill in final commissioning.

Third-quarter output fell 9% to 11,008 ounces because of lower grades at Palito, while Coringa's contribution rose 18% to 8,101 ounces. Hodgson expects Palito's grades to improve this quarter. Serabi will update its guidance again with third-quarter results in late November.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. A shortfall of about 9,000 ounces at a small producer is far too small to affect the global gold price.

What to watch

  • Funai's decision on the Coringa Indigenous impact study.
  • Whether Brazil's National Mining Agency extends the trial licence before it expires on January 29.
  • Serabi's next guidance update with its third-quarter results in late November.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-21: Serabi cuts its 2026 production outlook and its shares fall 13% in Toronto.
  • 2027-01-29: Coringa's trial mining licence is due to expire unless extended.

Government Policies

Brazil's permitting, including Funai's Indigenous review, is now the main limit on Serabi's growth.

Mining Production

Third-quarter output fell 9% to 11,008 ounces on lower grades at Palito, despite higher output from Coringa.

What could lift prices

  • Palito's expanded plant can process more ore as soon as Coringa's permits arrive.
  • Serabi expects Palito's grades to improve this quarter.

What could weigh on prices

  • Coringa's trial licence expires on January 29 unless it is extended.
  • Funai's final approval has no set date.

Who gains, who loses

  • Indigenous communities near Coringa: Federal review of the project's impact on them must be completed before full operations.
  • Serabi Gold shareholders: The shares fell 13% on the lower production outlook.

Other ways this could play out

  • If Funai approves the study soon, Serabi could start filling its expanded plant early in 2027.
  • If the trial licence lapses without an extension, Coringa ore shipments could stop entirely.

Price risks

  • Gold prices are driven by rates and central banks, not by output at one small miner.
  • A sharp fall in gold prices would hurt Serabi more than the lost ounces.
