Sigma Lithium has pushed back the maturity of its $100 million debt by six months, to June 2027, giving it more time to ramp up after restarting its Brazilian operations on October 5. It has produced 7,090 tonnes of concentrate since.
At a glance
- Synergy Capital agreed to move the debt's maturity to June 2027 from December 2026, with the interest rate unchanged.
- Sigma restarted on October 5 after Brazil's Federal Superior Court reinstated all of its environmental licences.
- The company still targets annualised output of 330,000 tonnes of lithium oxide concentrate by the end of 2027.
Background
Sigma Lithium mines lithium in Brazil's Vale do Jequitinhonha region and sells lithium oxide concentrate, a raw material for battery chemicals. Its operations resumed only after Brazil's Federal Superior Court reinstated all of its environmental licences. Senior secured debt is a loan backed by company assets that is repaid before other debts.
What Sigma agreed
Sigma Lithium has agreed with Synergy Capital to push back the maturity of its $100 million senior secured debt by six months, the company said on October 23. The debt now falls due in June 2027 instead of December 2026. The interest rate stays at SOFR plus 6.95% a year. The basic terms and default triggers of the original December 2022 agreement are unchanged.
The extension removes a final repayment that was due in December and moves 93% of the company's debt profile to June 2027. Total debt stood at $125 million on October 21, about 40% lower than two years earlier, after more than $90 million of repayments since the second quarter of 2024.
Why it needs time
Sigma restarted operations on October 5 after Brazil's Federal Superior Court reinstated all of its environmental licences. Between October 5 and October 21, it produced 7,090 tonnes of lithium oxide concentrate. "The six-month extension provides additional time to continue ramping up production ahead of the new maturity date," chief executive Ana Cabral said.
What comes next
Sigma keeps its target of reaching annualised production of 330,000 tonnes of concentrate by the end of 2027, using its Cleantech Industrial Plant and its recycling and reprocessing circuits. Cabral said low costs and current lithium prices should help the company regain operating cash flow. Sigma will report third-quarter production, sales, prices, costs and cash by November 13.
Our read
Outlook: bearish. Sigma's restart adds Brazilian lithium concentrate back to the market, though its 7,090 tonnes so far are small.
What to watch
- Sigma's third-quarter results, due by November 13.
- The pace of concentrate output as the restart ramps up toward the 330,000-tonne annual target.
- Whether operating cash flow recovers ahead of the June 2027 maturity.

| Lithium Mining | Positive | Sigma gains time to rebuild cash flow after restarting. |
| Battery Manufacturing | Positive | Battery chemical makers regain a source of lithium concentrate. |
Who gains, who loses
- Workers in the Vale do Jequitinhonha: Sigma says it supports 19,000 jobs across 12 municipalities in the region.
- Sigma Lithium: It still faces repayment of most of its debt in June 2027 at SOFR plus 6.95%.
Other ways this could play out
- If output ramps up quickly, Sigma could rebuild cash flow before June 2027.
- If the ramp-up stalls, it may need another extension or new financing.
Price risks
- A faster ramp-up toward 330,000 tonnes would add more supply than expected.
- Renewed legal or licence problems could halt output again.
