Southern Palladium has more than doubled the estimated value of its Bengwenyama platinum group metals project in South Africa, to $1.96 billion from $857 million. Much higher chrome recoveries and stronger metal price forecasts drove the upgrade.
At a glance
- Chrome recoveries rise to 85.6% from 30% in the earlier study.
- The project would produce 200,000 ounces of PGMs a year at first, rising to 420,000 ounces.
- Peak funding need rises by $50 million to $329 million.
Background
Bengwenyama is on the Eastern Limb of South Africa's Bushveld Complex, the world's main source of platinum group metals. Chrome often occurs with PGMs there and is sold for stainless steel making. Net present value (NPV) estimates what a project is worth today, using an assumed discount rate.
What happened
Southern Palladium said on Tuesday that an updated prefeasibility study lifts Bengwenyama's post-tax net present value to $1.96 billion from $857 million, at an 8% discount rate, Miningmx reported. Its shares rose just over 10% in early trading.
The main drivers are higher chrome recoveries, now 85.6% against 30% previously, and a long-term platinum price forecast 45% higher at $1,738 an ounce.
A PGM and chrome mine
Executive chairman Roger Baxter said Bengwenyama is "no longer simply a PGM project with chrome credits, but a PGM-chrome co-product operation". Steady-state chrome concentrate output rises to about 1 million tonnes a year from 350,000 tonnes, and life-of-mine chrome output to 17.2 million tonnes from 6 million.
The project will be built in two phases, producing 200,000 ounces of PGMs a year at first and 420,000 ounces in the second phase. The expected PGM basket price over the 33-year life of mine is $2,210 an ounce, 57% higher than before.
What comes next
Southern Palladium said the higher-grade chrome concentrate puts it in a position to advance talks on an offtake deal with a smelting and refining partner. A stronger rand assumption raises its peak funding need by $50 million to $329 million.
Our read
Outlook: neutral. Bengwenyama is still a development project and will not affect PGM supply for years.
What to watch
- An offtake agreement with a smelting and refining partner.
- Financing for the $329 million peak funding requirement.
- Movements in platinum, palladium and chrome prices.

Detailed analysis
Timeline
- 2026-04: Southern Palladium flags higher chrome output.
- 2026-10-13: An updated prefeasibility study lifts the project NPV to $1.96 billion.
Supply Drivers
Bengwenyama could add up to 420,000 ounces a year of PGMs in its second phase.
Mining Production
Chrome output would rise to about 1 million tonnes a year at steady state.
What could lift prices
- Higher chrome recoveries add a second revenue stream.
- The study assumes stronger platinum prices.
What could weigh on prices
- Peak funding needs rose to $329 million.
- The 8% discount rate may be generous for a greenfield South African project.
Country impact
| Country | Impact | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| South Africa | Medium | A new PGM and chrome project on the Bushveld moves forward. |
Industry impact
| Industry | Effect | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PGM Mining | Positive | A PGM developer has sharply raised its project value. |
Who gains, who loses
- Southern Palladium shareholders: The shares rose about 10% on the news.
Other ways this could play out
- If PGM prices stay high and an offtake is signed, Bengwenyama could move towards financing.
- If prices fall back, the higher valuation would shrink.
Price risks
- PGM prices are volatile.
- Competing PGM projects are also seeking offtake partners.
Technical view
Price is trading below both its 20-period and 50-period moving averages, a bearish alignment.
