Valterra Replaces Sibanye-Stillwater as a Buyer of Tharisa's Platinum Concentrate

Outlook: Neutral · October 15, 2026
Valterra Replaces Sibanye-Stillwater as a Buyer of Tharisa's Platinum Concentrate

Valterra Platinum will buy half of the platinum group metal concentrate from Tharisa's South African mine from January 2027, taking over from Sibanye-Stillwater. The two companies will also look at recovering fine chrome at Valterra's plants.

At a glance

  • Northam Platinum keeps its existing deal for the other half of the Tharisa mine's concentrate.
  • Valterra already buys concentrate from Tharisa's Karo project in Zimbabwe under a five-year deal signed in August.
  • Tharisa expects to produce 150,000-170,000 ounces of PGMs from the Tharisa mine in 2027.

Background

Platinum group metals (PGMs) such as platinum, palladium and rhodium are mined together in South Africa. Smaller miners like Tharisa produce a concentrate, a powder of crushed ore rich in these metals, and sell it to larger groups that own smelters and refineries. These offtake contracts decide who processes the metal and on what terms.

What happened

Tharisa Minerals, a Tharisa subsidiary, will sell 50% of the PGM concentrate from the Tharisa mine to Valterra Platinum, Business Day reported on October 15. The buyer is Rustenburg Platinum Mines, a Valterra subsidiary. The binding, multi-year agreement starts on January 1, 2027.

Valterra replaces Sibanye-Stillwater as one of Tharisa's two buyers. Northam Platinum keeps its existing arrangement for the other half of the mine's output. The Tharisa mine lies in South Africa's North West province.

Why the deal matters

Selling concentrate under long-term contracts gives a mid-sized miner certainty about where its metal goes. Chief executive Phoevos Pouroulis said the Valterra and Northam arrangements provide that certainty for Tharisa's PGM production.

The deal also deepens an existing tie. In August, Valterra became the buyer of concentrate from Tharisa's Karo Platinum project in Zimbabwe under a five-year agreement. Tharisa now has Valterra as a partner at both of its PGM operations.

The chrome angle

The two companies will also explore recovering fine chrome at Valterra's operations using Tharisa's own VulcanX technology. Pouroulis called it "a tangible step" toward deploying the technology, and Valterra chief executive Craig Miller said the work is part of efforts to improve cash flow margins.

Tharisa produced 153,700 ounces of PGMs and 1.56 million tonnes of chrome concentrate in its 2026 financial year. For 2027, it expects 150,000-170,000 ounces of PGMs and 1.5-1.65 million tonnes of chrome concentrate from the Tharisa mine.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. The deal changes who processes Tharisa's metal, not how much is mined. It has no direct effect on platinum supply.

What to watch

  • Whether the chrome recovery trials at Valterra's operations lead to a commercial agreement.
  • Progress at the Karo Platinum project in Zimbabwe, where Valterra is also the buyer.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-15: Tharisa announces a PGM concentrate offtake with Valterra's Rustenburg Platinum Mines.
  • 2027-01-01: Valterra starts buying half of the Tharisa mine's PGM concentrate.

Mining Production

Tharisa guides 150,000-170,000 ounces of PGMs from the Tharisa mine in 2027, against 153,700 ounces in 2026.

Refinery Output

Valterra will process more third-party concentrate, adding feed to its smelters and refineries from 2027.

What could lift prices

  • Tharisa's average PGM basket price rose to $2,607 an ounce in its 2026 year from $1,615 a year earlier.
  • Long-term offtakes support steady output from mid-sized South African producers.

What could weigh on prices

  • Tharisa's 2027 output range could leave production flat compared with 2026.
  • Processing deals do not address weak mining output elsewhere in South Africa.

Who gains, who loses

  • Valterra Platinum: It gains more concentrate to process and a possible new chrome revenue stream.
  • Sibanye-Stillwater: It loses its role as buyer of half the Tharisa mine's concentrate from 2027.

Other ways this could play out

  • If the chrome trials succeed, VulcanX could be rolled out more widely at Valterra's plants.
  • If PGM prices fall, the value of the concentrate under these deals would drop with them.

Price risks

  • A weaker PGM basket price would cut Tharisa's revenue regardless of who buys its concentrate.
  • Mining disruptions in South Africa could still affect the platinum market.
