Troilus Lines Up $850 Million of Debt for Its Quebec Gold-Copper Mine

Troilus Lines Up $850 Million of Debt for Its Quebec Gold-Copper Mine

Troilus Mining has secured a credit-approved commitment for $850 million of debt from KfW IPEX-Bank and Société Générale for its gold-copper project in Quebec. It brings the company close to funding the estimated $1.43 billion cost of building the mine.

At a glance

  • KfW IPEX-Bank and Société Générale approved $850 million, or about C$1.21 billion, of senior secured debt.
  • Export Development Canada has proposed a further $250 million, still subject to final approval, to complete a $1.1 billion package.
  • The loans carry up to three years of grace during construction, then a 10-year repayment linked to cash flow.

Background

Troilus is a former gold-copper mine about 170 km north of Chibougamau in Quebec that Troilus Mining plans to reopen at a much larger scale. Big mines are usually funded with a mix of equity and project debt, and lenders only commit once engineering studies show the project can repay them. Export credit agencies such as Export Development Canada often join these packages.

What happened

Troilus Mining has received a credit-approved commitment letter from KfW IPEX-Bank and Société Générale to underwrite $850 million of senior secured debt. That is about C$1.21 billion.

It forms part of a planned $1.1 billion debt package. A proposed $250 million contribution from Export Development Canada remains subject to final approval.

The terms

The facilities include up to three years of repayment grace while the mine is built, followed by a 10-year repayment profile aligned with the project's cash flow.

"These credit approvals represent one of the most significant financing milestones in Troilus' development to date," said chief executive Justin Reid. Initial capital is now estimated at about $1.43 billion, reflecting a more advanced project design backed by about 95,000 hours of engineering.

What it means

The debt covers most of the build cost, leaving a smaller gap to fill with equity and other funding. The project already has offtake agreements with Boliden and Aurubis, including a long-term deal signed with Boliden in March for its copper-gold concentrate.

Over a 26-year mine life, the project is planned to produce about 4.6 million ounces of gold, 472 million pounds of copper and 10.9 million ounces of silver from a 50,000-tonne-a-day mill. The study behind it shows an after-tax net present value of $3.2 billion, an internal rate of return of 22% and a payback of 3.6 years.

All-in sustaining costs are estimated at $1,340 an ounce of gold after by-product credits, well below today's gold price. A construction decision is the next major step.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. The financing moves a future mine closer to construction but adds no gold or copper supply for several years.

What to watch

  • Final approval of Export Development Canada's proposed $250 million contribution.
  • Troilus Mining's construction decision for the project.
  • How the company funds the remaining equity portion of the $1.43 billion cost.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-02: Troilus Mining announces $850 million of credit-approved debt commitments from KfW IPEX-Bank and Société Générale.

Supply Drivers

Debt funding brings a large Canadian gold-copper mine closer to a construction decision.

Mining Production

The project is planned to produce about 4.6 million ounces of gold and 472 million pounds of copper over 26 years.

What could lift prices

  • New mine supply is years away, so it does not weigh on gold or copper prices now.
  • Lenders committing to a large mine signals confidence in metal prices.

What could weigh on prices

  • A funded Troilus would add meaningful gold and copper supply later this decade.
  • More projects reaching financing could add to future supply.

Who gains, who loses

  • Troilus Mining shareholders: Debt covering most of the build cost reduces the equity the company must raise.
  • Competing mine developers seeking finance: Lenders' capital committed to Troilus is not available for other projects.

Other ways this could play out

  • If EDC approves its share and a construction decision follows, building could start soon after.
  • If costs rise above $1.43 billion, Troilus may need more funding before building.

Price risks

  • Gold and copper prices can change the project's economics before construction.
  • Permitting or cost overruns could delay the build.
