Volta Hits 283 g/t Gallium Oxide at Its Springer Rare Earth Deposit in Ontario

Outlook: Neutral · October 5, 2026
Volta Hits 283 g/t Gallium Oxide at Its Springer Rare Earth Deposit in Ontario

Volta Metals found gallium throughout three new drill holes at its Springer rare earth deposit in Ontario, with a best section of 7.54% rare earth oxides and 283 grams of gallium oxide per tonne. It now plans its first gallium resource estimate.

At a glance

  • Hole SL26-29 averaged 1.36% rare earth oxides and 81.3 g/t gallium oxide over 165.3 metres.
  • Hole SL26-30 hit a zone rich in dysprosium and terbium, two heavy rare earths used in magnets.
  • Volta targets updated rare earth and gallium resource estimates in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Background

Gallium is a soft metal used in chips for power electronics, radar and LEDs, and China supplies most of the world's output. Rare earth explorers grade their rock by total rare earth oxides, or TREO. Grades are given in grams per tonne (g/t), so 100 g/t means 100 grams in every tonne of rock. Springer is near Sturgeon Falls in northern Ontario.

What happened

Volta Metals released assays on October 1 from three holes at Springer, completing its 13-hole 2026 winter program. Hole SL26-29 averaged 1.36% total rare earth oxides and 81.3 g/t gallium oxide over 165.3 metres.

Within that section, a 2.95-metre slice graded 7.54% rare earth oxides and 283 g/t gallium oxide, the best result of this year's drilling. "Both drill holes average approximately 1% rare earth oxides over roughly 290m to 350m, with more than 30 g/t gallium oxide in every sample," chief executive Kerem Usenmez said of the two central holes.

Why the results matter

SL26-29 extended the mineralisation about 190 metres beyond the eastern edge of the deposit's planned open pit. A sample near the bottom of the hole, more than 400 metres below the surface, still graded nearly 2% rare earth oxides. Volta says the deposit remains open at depth.

SL26-30 hit a 3-metre zone where heavy rare earths made up 18.2% of the total, with 278 g/t of dysprosium oxide and 44 g/t of terbium oxide. Both metals are prized for their use in high-performance permanent magnets.

What comes next

Springer already has a resource of 56.6 million tonnes indicated at 0.70% rare earth oxides and 119.5 million tonnes inferred at 0.58%, published in February. Gallium is not part of that estimate. Volta plans separate rare earth and gallium estimates in the fourth quarter, but warns there is no assurance a gallium resource will be defined at all.

These are early exploration results, not plans for a mine. Their value is as a possible future source of gallium and magnet metals outside China, if the grades hold up in a formal estimate.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Drill results from an early-stage project do not change gallium or rare earth supply today. They would matter for prices only if Springer moves toward production, which is years away.

What to watch

  • Volta's updated rare earth and first gallium resource estimates, targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026.
  • Results of the metallurgical work that the gallium estimate depends on.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-02-23: Volta reports an updated Springer rare earth resource estimate.
  • 2026-10-01: Volta releases the final assays from its 13-hole 2026 winter drill program.

Demand Drivers

Dysprosium and terbium found in SL26-30 are needed for high-performance permanent magnets.

Supply Drivers

Springer could become a source of gallium outside China if a formal resource is defined.

What could lift prices

  • Any new supply from Springer is years away, even if a gallium resource is defined.
  • Volta itself warns a gallium resource may not be defined at all.

What could weigh on prices

  • Gallium in every sample adds to evidence of potential supply in North America.
  • The deposit remains open at depth and beyond the planned pit, which could make it larger.

Country impact

Industry impact

IndustryEffectReason
Mining ExplorationPositiveThe final 2026 assays extend Springer and support new resource estimates.
Semiconductor ManufacturingNeutralChipmakers gain no new gallium supply until a mine is built.

Who gains, who loses

  • Volta Metals shareholders: The best intercept of the program supports the coming resource estimates.
  • Buyers needing gallium now: Early drill results do nothing for current supply, which China dominates.

Other ways this could play out

  • If the fourth-quarter estimate defines a gallium resource, Springer could join a short list of non-Chinese gallium projects.
  • If metallurgical work delays the estimate, the gallium case for Springer will stay unproven for longer.

Price risks

  • Wider Chinese export curbs on gallium would matter far more for prices than new exploration results.
  • A failure to define a gallium resource would weaken hopes for North American supply.
