Westwin Elements Plans a $502 Million Class 1 Nickel Refinery in Mississippi

Westwin Elements Plans a $502 Million Class 1 Nickel Refinery in Mississippi

Westwin Elements will invest $502 million over five years to build a Class 1 nickel refinery in Natchez, Mississippi. The first phase is designed to produce 18,000 tonnes of high-purity nickel a year, with commissioning targeted for 2029.

At a glance

  • Westwin has finished a bankable feasibility study and signed binding feedstock and offtake agreements for the first phase.
  • Its 20-tonne-a-year demonstration plant in Lawton, Oklahoma has already produced on-spec Class 1 nickel powder.
  • The first phase is expected to create 134 full-time jobs paying about $84,000 a year on average.

Background

Class 1 nickel is the high-purity grade used in specialty alloys, aerospace, defence and energy, as opposed to lower-grade nickel used mainly in stainless steel. The US relies on foreign processing for much of the nickel it uses. Westwin uses nickel carbonyl refining, a process that turns nickel into a gas and then back into very pure metal.

What happened

Westwin Elements said on Monday it will invest $502 million over five years in a commercial-scale Class 1 nickel refinery at the Belwood Industrial Site in Natchez, Mississippi. The first phase is planned to produce 18,000 tonnes of Class 1 nickel a year, with commissioning targeted for 2029.

The company has completed a bankable feasibility study for the site and secured a long-term lease. Binding feedstock and offtake agreements are already in place to support the first phase.

How it got here

Natchez builds on Westwin's demonstration plant in Lawton, Oklahoma, which can make 20 tonnes a year. That plant has completed several production runs of on-spec Class 1 nickel powder using nickel carbonyl refining.

The Belwood site sits next to Natchez's inland port and has access to regional transport networks, which Westwin says it needs for commercial-scale production. "Westwin was founded with the mission of delivering a win for the West and restoring the blue-collar American dream by bringing a critical industry back home," said chief executive KaLeigh Long.

What it means

The project is part of a push to rebuild critical mineral refining in the US and reduce dependence on foreign processing. High-purity nickel goes into defence, aerospace, specialty alloys and energy uses. "The Natchez site gives us the capacity to produce American-made Class 1 nickel at scale," Long said.

The first phase is expected to create 134 full-time jobs at an average salary of about $84,000. At 18,000 tonnes a year, it would be a meaningful domestic source, though small next to the global nickel market.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. The refinery will not start until 2029 and is small relative to global supply. It matters more for US supply security than for nickel prices.

What to watch

  • Construction progress toward commissioning in 2029.
  • Details of Westwin's feedstock suppliers and offtake customers.
  • Plans for later phases beyond the first 18,000 tonnes.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-05: Westwin Elements announces a $502 million nickel refinery in Natchez, Mississippi.

Government Policies

The project supports the US push to rebuild domestic critical mineral refining.

Refinery Output

Westwin plans 18,000 tonnes a year of US Class 1 nickel from 2029.

What could lift prices

  • New Western refining capacity needs feedstock, adding demand for nickel intermediates.
  • Output is years away, so near-term Class 1 supply is unchanged.

What could weigh on prices

  • A new US refinery adds Class 1 nickel supply from 2029.
  • Binding offtake deals mean some buyers have secured future supply.

Country impact

Who gains, who loses

  • US defence and aerospace manufacturers: They gain a potential domestic source of Class 1 nickel.
  • Natchez, Mississippi: The first phase is expected to create 134 full-time jobs.
  • Overseas nickel refiners: US buyers may shift some purchases to domestic supply.

Other ways this could play out

  • If commissioning stays on track for 2029, the US gains a new commercial-scale source of Class 1 nickel.
  • If costs or permits slip, the start date could move beyond 2029.

Price risks

  • Global nickel prices depend far more on Indonesian output than on this project.
  • Construction delays would postpone the new supply.
