Xtra-Gold Lifts Its Kibi Project in Ghana to 1.4 Million Indicated Gold Ounces

Xtra-Gold Lifts Its Kibi Project in Ghana to 1.4 Million Indicated Gold Ounces

Xtra-Gold Resources says its Kibi gold project in Ghana now holds an indicated resource of 1,404,900 ounces across 11 deposits, after 123 new drill holes. Part of that gold lies in a buffer zone whose addition to its mining lease is still awaiting government approval.

At a glance

  • The indicated resource is 39 million tonnes grading 1.12 grams of gold per tonne.
  • A further 180,800 ounces are classed as inferred, the least certain category.
  • About 156,100 indicated ounces lie in a buffer zone Xtra-Gold applied to add to its lease in 2015.

Background

A mineral resource estimate is a company's independent calculation of how much metal a deposit holds. 'Indicated' resources are known with reasonable confidence; 'inferred' ones are less certain. A resource is not a reserve: it does not yet show the gold can be mined profitably. Xtra-Gold is a Toronto-listed explorer working in Ghana's Kibi gold belt.

What happened

Xtra-Gold Resources said on October 13 that an updated estimate puts its Kibi gold project at an indicated resource of 1,404,900 ounces, from 39 million tonnes grading 1.12 grams per tonne. A further 180,800 ounces are inferred.

The estimate adds 123 diamond drill holes, totalling 27,384.5 metres, drilled since the previous estimate in September 2024. It includes an updated resource for the Boomerang deposit and a first resource for the Orange No. 5 deposit. The resource now spans 11 deposits lying within about 4.5 kilometres of each other, and the estimate was prepared by Pivot Mining Consultants and Tect Geological Consulting.

The lease question

Not all of the gold sits inside Xtra-Gold's current mining lease. About 156,100 indicated ounces lie in a buffer zone between the Apapam lease and a forest reserve.

Xtra-Gold applied to add the buffer zone when it sought to extend and renew the lease in June 2015, updated the application in June 2019, and is still awaiting formal approval. Inside the current lease, the indicated resource is 1,248,800 ounces. The company says there is no assurance approval will be granted, though the existing lease remains in force under Ghanaian law in the meantime.

What it means

Chief executive James Longshore called the update 'another major milestone' for the project. Xtra-Gold is continuing an aggressive drilling campaign with its in-house diamond rigs, testing targets near the deposits and across the wider concession.

The project is still at the resource stage, not a mine. Its next value test is whether Ghana approves the lease extension, at a time when the government has said it plans to rewrite its mining bill to restore 20-year leases.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. A resource update at an exploration project does not change gold supply. Any effect is limited to the company.

What to watch

  • Ghana's decision on extending the Apapam lease to include the buffer zone.
  • Results from Xtra-Gold's ongoing drilling campaign.
  • Any economic study that tests whether the resource can be mined profitably.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2015-06-17: Xtra-Gold applies to extend the Apapam mining lease, including the buffer zone.
  • 2026-10-13: Xtra-Gold reports an updated Kibi resource of 1.4 million indicated ounces.

Government Policies

Part of the resource depends on Ghana approving a lease extension filed in 2015.

Mining Production

The Kibi project holds 1.4 million indicated ounces but has no mine yet.

What could lift prices

  • Exploration-stage projects add no near-term gold supply.
  • Lease uncertainty in Ghana can delay new mines.

What could weigh on prices

  • Growing resources in Ghana's gold belts add to the long-term supply pipeline.
  • Xtra-Gold continues to drill and could expand the resource further.

Who gains, who loses

  • Xtra-Gold Resources: Its project now holds 1.4 million indicated ounces.
  • Xtra-Gold, if the lease is not extended: About 156,100 indicated ounces depend on the buffer zone approval.

Other ways this could play out

  • If Ghana approves the buffer zone, all 1.4 million indicated ounces would sit inside Xtra-Gold's lease.
  • If approval is refused, the indicated resource within the lease would be 1,248,800 ounces.

Price risks

  • A falling gold price would weaken the case for developing the project.
  • Delays in Ghana's mining law changes could hold up lease decisions.
