Platinum vs Palladium: A Relationship That Flipped

Platinum trades at ₹4,379.30 per gram today, with palladium currently about 31.9% below it. For decades platinum was the more valuable of the two. That changed as the auto industry's engine mix shifted: platinum is the primary catalyst metal for diesel-engine catalytic converters, while palladium does the equivalent job for gasoline engines.

When diesel car sales fell sharply, especially across Europe, platinum demand fell with it. Gasoline and hybrid vehicles kept selling strongly, keeping palladium demand firm and eventually pushing its price above platinum's — a genuine reversal of a relationship that had held for most of modern trading history.
