Overview

Copper rod is the intermediate product that sits between refined copper cathode and finished copper wire, and it's the form the vast majority of the world's copper actually passes through on its way to becoming electrical cable. Rod is produced by continuous casting — melting copper cathode and casting it directly into a continuous strand — followed immediately by hot rolling to bring it down to a standard diameter, most commonly around 8 millimetres, ready to be shipped to wire-drawing plants.

From Cathode to Rod

The continuous casting and rolling process, sometimes called the SCR (Southwire Continuous Rod) process after the technology that popularised it, is prized for producing rod with very consistent quality and purity in a highly automated, high-throughput operation — a meaningful advantage over older batch-casting methods when the end goal is feeding a wire-drawing line that needs a steady, defect-free strand. The purity of the finished rod, typically 99.9% copper or higher, matters enormously downstream: even small impurities can measurably reduce electrical conductivity, which is the entire reason copper is chosen over cheaper conductors in the first place.

Why Rod Matters for Wire Demand

Because copper rod is the direct precursor to copper wire, and copper wire is the backbone of virtually all electrical infrastructure — building wiring, power cables, motor windings, transformer coils — rod production volumes are one of the more reliable leading indicators of underlying copper demand from the electrical and construction sectors. A producer expanding its rod capacity, or a spike in rod output, is generally a signal of expected or actual growth in downstream wire and cable demand, rather than a development that matters much on its own.
