Overview

Nickel matte is an intermediate product of nickel smelting — a dense, dark, largely sulfide-based material that concentrates the nickel from ore into a much smaller, more valuable mass before final refining. It typically contains somewhere between 60% and 75% nickel by weight, with copper, iron, and sulfur making up most of the remainder, and it's produced in granulated pellet form or cast into solid blocks for shipping between smelters and refineries. It isn't a finished product in its own right; it exists purely as a stepping-stone between mined ore and refined nickel metal or nickel chemicals, and its value is set largely by its nickel content and the cost of further processing it requires.

How It's Manufactured

Matte smelting starts with nickel sulfide ore concentrate, which is fed into a furnace along with fluxes and heated to temperatures well above 1,200°C. The heat melts the charge into two separate liquid layers that settle by density: a lighter slag layer containing most of the unwanted iron and silica, which is skimmed off and discarded or sold as construction aggregate, and a heavier sulfide matte layer rich in nickel, copper, and residual iron, which is drawn off separately. In recent years, producers — especially in Indonesia — have adapted this process to also treat laterite (oxide) ore, which doesn't naturally contain sulfur, by adding a sulfur source during smelting so it can still be converted into matte rather than routed through the traditional acid-leach process.

Byproducts

The slag skimmed off during matte smelting is the largest-volume byproduct, and while much of it is disposed of in tailings, some producers process it further or sell it for use in cement and construction aggregate once it's confirmed to be chemically stable. Sulfur dioxide gas released during smelting is another major byproduct stream; modern smelters capture it and convert it into sulfuric acid, which is then sold or used on-site, both to control air pollution and to recover value from what would otherwise be a waste gas. The matte itself, once separated, still contains meaningful copper and cobalt alongside nickel, both of which are recovered as valuable co-products during the downstream refining stage rather than discarded.

Who Consumes It

Nickel refineries are the direct buyers of matte, converting it into refined nickel metal, nickel sulfate, or mixed nickel-cobalt intermediates through further pressure leaching and electro-refining. Those refined products then flow to two very different end markets: stainless steel mills, which remain the largest single consumer of nickel worldwide, and battery manufacturers supplying the electric vehicle industry, which buy nickel sulfate made from refined nickel or matte for lithium-ion battery cathodes. Indonesia's rapid buildout of matte-producing smelters over the past several years has been driven substantially by demand from Chinese and South Korean battery-material makers looking to secure nickel feedstock outside the traditional sulfide-mining regions of Canada, Russia, and Australia.

Everyday Uses

Consumers never encounter nickel matte directly — it's an intermediate industrial material several processing steps removed from anything sold at retail — but its nickel content ends up in a wide range of familiar products. Refined from matte, nickel goes into the stainless steel used in kitchen sinks, cutlery, and appliances, into the rechargeable batteries inside electric vehicles and some consumer electronics, and into nickel-containing alloys used for decades in circulating coinage in many countries. It's also present in small amounts in many everyday metal alloys prized for corrosion resistance, from plumbing fixtures to jewelry findings, though almost none of this nickel reaches a consumer in a form recognizable as having started out as smelted matte.

Industrial Uses

Refined from matte, nickel is essential to austenitic stainless steel, where it's alloyed with chromium and iron to improve corrosion resistance and formability — stainless steel accounts for the majority of global nickel demand. Nickel from matte also goes into superalloys used in jet engines and gas turbines, where it maintains strength at extremely high temperatures, and into nickel-based plating that protects other metals from corrosion and wear in industrial equipment. The fastest-growing industrial use is battery-grade nickel sulfate for lithium-ion battery cathodes, particularly the nickel-heavy NMC and NCA chemistries used in electric vehicles, which has made matte-to-battery-material supply chains, especially Indonesia's, a major focus of investment over the past several years.
