Overview
PCB-grade solder is the tin-based alloy used to physically and electrically attach components — chips, resistors, connectors — to a printed circuit board, making it a small but genuinely essential material in every piece of modern electronics. Despite the tiny quantity used in any single device, the sheer number of electronic products manufactured worldwide makes solder one of tin's largest and most consistent end uses.
The Lead-Free Transition
For decades, the electronics industry's standard solder was a tin-lead alloy, commonly 63% tin and 37% lead, valued for its low, well-controlled melting point and reliable joint quality. Environmental and health regulations — most notably the European Union's RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive and similar rules adopted elsewhere — pushed the industry toward lead-free alternatives, with SAC alloys (tin-silver-copper, commonly around 96.5% tin, 3% silver and 0.5% copper) becoming the dominant replacement. That shift increased the tin content of standard solder compared with the old tin-lead formula, modestly increasing the amount of tin used per unit of solder across the entire electronics manufacturing industry.

Because solder is tin-dominant and used across essentially every category of electronic device, from simple appliances to advanced AI server hardware, PCB manufacturing volume is one of the more direct and closely watched drivers of global tin demand. A surge in electronics or circuit-board production — driven, for instance, by a boom in a particular category of hardware — tends to show up fairly quickly in tin consumption figures, making solder demand one of the clearer real-world links between a specific industrial trend and a specific metal's price.
