Refined Lead

Covered in 2 MetalsCost.com News Intelligence articles, most recently on October 4, 2026.

Form High-purity lead metal, 99.97%-99.99% Pb, cast into ingots
Production Routes Primary smelting/electrolytic refining; secondary battery recycling
Secondary Share of Supply Around 67% of global refined lead came from recycled material in 2025
Primary Use Lead-acid batteries
Major Producers China, USA, India, South Korea, Mexico

Overview

Refined lead is lead metal purified to a consistent, tradeable grade — either produced from scratch by smelting and electrolytically refining lead sulfide concentrate, or recovered by melting down and refining scrap lead, overwhelmingly from spent lead-acid batteries. Unlike most industrial metals, secondary (recycled) material is now the majority source rather than a supplement to primary production.

Recycling Dominance

Recycled material accounted for about 67.4% of global refined lead output in 2025, essentially unchanged from 67.8% the year before, reflecting decades of investment in closed-loop battery collection and recycling infrastructure in major markets like the US, Europe, China and India. That closed loop exists because lead-acid batteries are both easy to collect (most are traded in against a new battery) and economical to recycle, unlike many other metal-bearing waste streams.
