Zinc Price — 10-Day Trend
All prices in ₹ per gram · daily rate, updated once per day
Two Exchanges, One Underlying Metal
Zinc traders in India routinely watch two prices at once: the London Metal Exchange's global zinc benchmark, and the Multi Commodity Exchange's own rupee-denominated zinc futures. They're not competing prices for two different products — they're two markets pricing the same underlying metal, one in the world's reference currency for base metals, the other adjusted for India's own currency and logistics. Today's domestic reference rate sits at ₹0.33 per gram.
MCX offers two zinc contract sizes to match different trading needs: a standard contract at 5 metric tonnes per lot with a tick size of Rs 1 per kg, and a smaller Zinc Mini contract at 1 metric tonne per lot for traders who don't want to commit the capital a full-size lot requires.
- LME zinc: the global reference market, priced in US dollars per tonne
- MCX zinc (standard): 5 metric tonnes per lot, Rs 1/kg tick size
- MCX Zinc Mini: 1 metric tonne per lot, monthly expiries, aimed at smaller traders

Why the Two Prices Move Together — and What Widens the Gap
MCX zinc isn't set independently. It's priced against the same underlying global metal the LME benchmarks, converted into Indian rupees at the prevailing USD/INR exchange rate, with import duty and logistics costs layered on where relevant. That's why the two prices trend together almost all the time — a rally or a sell-off on the LME shows up on MCX within the same trading session, not days later.
Where the currency layer matters
The gap opens up when the rupee itself moves independently of zinc. If the LME price stays flat but the rupee weakens against the dollar, MCX zinc rises anyway, purely on currency, even though nothing has changed about actual zinc supply and demand. A trader who only watches the domestic MCX number can misread that kind of move as a "zinc story" when it's really a currency story wearing a zinc contract's clothes.
MCX Zinc Mini's trading window — roughly 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM IST, Monday through Friday — is wide enough to overlap with a meaningful part of London trading hours, which is part of why the two markets stay so tightly linked throughout the day rather than only converging at the open.

What This Means for Anyone Using Either Price
For a fabricator or galvanizer sourcing physical zinc in India, the domestic reference rate is what actually matters day to day — it's the number that maps to real invoices. But understanding that it's built on top of an LME price plus a currency layer explains a lot of "why did zinc jump for no reason" moments, where the real reason was the rupee, not the metal.
For a trader specifically using MCX futures for hedging or speculation, watching LME zinc alongside the domestic contract is close to essential — it's the only way to separate a genuine global zinc move from a purely currency-driven one, and the two calls for very different positioning.
LME Zinc vs MCX Zinc — FAQs
India's Multi Commodity Exchange lists a standard zinc futures contract sized at 5 metric tonnes per lot, with a tick size of Rs 1 per kg. A smaller Zinc Mini contract, sized at 1 metric tonne per lot, is also available for traders who want zinc exposure without the capital a full-size lot requires.
Not directly, but the two are closely linked. The London Metal Exchange is the global reference market for zinc, and MCX zinc contracts are priced in Indian rupees against that same underlying global metal, adjusted for the USD/INR exchange rate and import-related costs — so MCX zinc tracks LME zinc's direction very closely while adding India-specific currency and logistics factors on top.
MCX Zinc Mini futures trade Monday through Friday, from around 9:00 AM to about 11:30 PM IST, with monthly contract expiries — hours long enough to overlap with both Asian and a meaningful part of European trading, when a large share of global LME zinc activity happens.
Because the gap between them carries information. LME zinc sets the global tone; MCX zinc reflects that plus the rupee's strength or weakness against the dollar. A trader who watches only the domestic MCX price risks missing whether a move is really about zinc, or mostly about the currency.
