Two Steps Between the Mine and the Metal
The zinc priced at ₹0.33 per gram on this page didn't come out of the ground looking anything like refined metal. It started as zinc ore, was crushed and processed at the mine into zinc concentrate — an intermediate material roughly half zinc by weight, mixed with waste minerals and other metals — and then had to be smelted and refined at a separate facility before it became the tradable metal tracked here.
That two-step path matters more than it might seem, because mining and smelting are genuinely separate businesses with separate capacity constraints. Why the Smelting Bottleneck Deserves Its Own Attention
It's tempting to think of zinc supply as one single number — how much comes out of the ground. In practice, it's really two numbers that have to line up: how much concentrate mines produce, and how much smelting capacity exists to process it into refined metal. Smelting is genuinely energy-intensive, which means smelter output can be constrained by power costs and availability in ways that have nothing to do with how much ore is sitting in a mine.
The treatment charge is where this shows up in the market
The fee a smelter charges a mining company to convert their concentrate into refined metal is called a treatment charge, and it moves like a real-time gauge of the balance between the two steps. When smelting capacity is tight relative to available concentrate, smelters can charge more for their processing services. When concentrate is scarce relative to smelting capacity — smelters competing for limited feedstock — treatment charges fall, sometimes sharply, as smelters bid down their own margin just to keep facilities running.
This is a genuinely separate market signal from the refined zinc price itself, watched closely by industry participants even though it rarely makes headline commodity news the way the metal price does.

Zinc concentrate is the intermediate product created when mined zinc ore is crushed and processed at the mine site to separate out the zinc-bearing mineral (mostly sphalerite, zinc sulfide) from waste rock. It's not usable metal yet — typically around half zinc content by weight — and still has to be smelted and refined before it becomes the metal priced on this page.
