Solar Quietly Became the Main Story

Every crystalline silicon solar panel needs a thin layer of silver paste to conduct current, and the scale-up of global solar manufacturing has pushed industrial demand — led by China's panel factories — to account for more than half of all silver used each year, ahead of jewellery and coins combined.

Mostly a Byproduct, Not a Primary Metal

Most of the world's mined silver doesn't come from dedicated silver mines — it's recovered as a byproduct of digging for copper, lead and zinc. Mexico is the major exception, a country whose silver mining identity predates the modern periodic table by centuries.

Unlike Gold, a Lot of It Never Comes Back

A large share of mined silver gets consumed industrially and never returns to the market — used up inside a solar cell or circuit board rather than melted down and resold the way jewellery is. Investors and traders also watch the gold-silver ratio (how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold) as a rough read on which metal looks cheap relative to the other, a ratio that has swung from under 20 to over 100 across different market cycles.
