Indian Gold ETF Inflows Jump 71% to ₹4,451 Crore in September Despite Falling Prices

Outlook: Bullish · October 12, 2026
Indian Gold ETF Inflows Jump 71% to ₹4,451 Crore in September Despite Falling Prices

Indian investors put ₹4,451 crore into gold exchange-traded funds in September, up 71% from ₹2,597 crore in August and the highest in seven months, according to AMFI data. The inflows came even as gold prices fell during the month.

At a glance

  • Gold ETFs have drawn about ₹45,925 crore so far in 2026, already more than the ₹42,961 crore for all of 2025.
  • Analysts point to geopolitical tension, inflation worries and investors buying the dip.
  • Equity mutual funds still drew far more, with net inflows of ₹38,307 crore in September.

Background

A gold ETF is a mutual fund that holds physical gold and trades on the stock exchange, so investors can own gold without buying jewellery or bars. The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) publishes monthly flows for every fund category.

What happened

Net inflows into Indian gold ETFs rose to ₹4,450.61 crore in September from ₹2,596.7 crore in August, AMFI data show. That is the highest monthly figure in seven months, and the highest so far in the 2026-27 financial year.

The money came in even though gold fell during the month. Gold was down nearly 5% in the domestic spot market, according to MCX data cited by Business Standard.

Why investors bought

Adil Chacko, executive director at Anand Rathi Wealth, told Mint that geopolitical uncertainty, inflation concerns and gold's role as a hedge drove the flows. "With tensions in West Asia and crude oil prices remaining elevated, demand for gold has naturally increased," he said. He added that the price correction may also have drawn in buyers.

Morningstar analyst Nehal Meshram said gold ETFs have attracted about ₹45,925 crore from January to September, already above the ₹42,961 crore collected in all of 2025.

What it means

The flows suggest Indian investors are treating gold as a regular part of their portfolios rather than abandoning other assets. Equity mutual funds drew ₹38,307 crore of net inflows in September, according to AMFI.

Monthly flows are still well below January, when gold ETFs took in about ₹24,040 crore as prices hit record highs.

Our read

Outlook: bullish. Strong ETF buying shows steady investment demand for gold in India, but it has not stopped prices from falling.

What to watch

  • October AMFI data, which will cover the Dhanteras and Diwali buying season.
  • Whether gold's price correction continues.
  • US inflation data and the rupee, both of which move Indian gold prices.
