Indian Steel Mills Raise Prices for a Third Month as Coal and Freight Costs Climb

Indian Steel Mills Raise Prices for a Third Month as Coal and Freight Costs Climb

Indian steelmakers raised prices by ₹2,000-2,700 a tonne in October, the third monthly increase in a row, as imported coking coal, ferro-alloys and shipping got costlier while demand stayed firm.

At a glance

  • Hot-rolled coil rose to ₹64,700 a tonne from ₹62,000 in September, according to BigMint data.
  • India's steel consumption is projected to grow by nearly 7.9%.
  • A safeguard duty and a weaker rupee have made imported steel less competitive.

Background

Hot-rolled coil (HRC) is a basic flat steel product used in pipes, vehicles and construction, and its price is the main benchmark for Indian steel. Indian mills rely on imported coking coal, a key ingredient in blast furnace steelmaking, so global coal prices and freight rates feed directly into their costs.

What happened

Steel companies increased prices by ₹2,000-2,700 a tonne in October, the third straight monthly rise, BusinessLine reported. Hot-rolled coil reached ₹64,700 a tonne, up from ₹62,000 in September, according to market intelligence platform BigMint.

Rajesh Singla, CEO of Alpha AMC, said prices have climbed by roughly ₹4,000 a tonne since August to a four-year high. He described the latest increase as the tail end of a cost-push cycle.

Why prices are rising

Raw materials have become more expensive. A senior steel company official said geopolitical uncertainty has pushed up the cost of imported coking and thermal coal and ferro-alloys, along with shipping. Higher domestic fuel and power costs have added to the pressure.

Supply is also tight. Antu Eapen Thomas of Geojit Investments said maintenance shutdowns at some mills have reduced availability, while the safeguard duty and a weaker rupee have made imports less competitive. That gives domestic mills room to pass on higher costs.

What it means for India

Demand is holding up, supported by government infrastructure spending and urban real estate. India's steel consumption is projected to grow by nearly 7.9%, faster than other major markets. Higher steel prices raise costs for builders, carmakers and pipe makers.

Choice Institutional Equities' Bhavik Bhagwanji Shah said sharp price cuts look unlikely this year while input costs stay high. Thomas cautioned that higher inflation and rising interest rates could slow demand in housing and autos, which may slow the pace of further increases.

Our read

Outlook: bullish. Firm Indian steel demand and rising steel prices support demand for iron ore. Global iron ore prices are still driven mainly by China.

What to watch

  • November steel price decisions by major Indian mills.
  • Imported coking coal prices and freight rates.
  • Housing and auto demand as interest rates rise.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-14: Steelmakers' October increases take hot-rolled coil to ₹64,700 a tonne, per BigMint.

Demand Drivers

Infrastructure spending and urban real estate keep Indian steel demand growing near 7.9%.

Supply Drivers

Maintenance shutdowns at some mills have tightened near-term steel availability.

Trade Tariffs

A safeguard duty has made imported steel less competitive in India.

What could lift prices

  • Infrastructure spending keeps steel demand strong.
  • Costlier imports protect domestic mills' pricing power.

What could weigh on prices

  • Rising interest rates could slow housing and auto demand.
  • Analysts see the latest increase as the tail end of the cost-push cycle.

Who gains, who loses

  • Indian steelmakers: They can raise prices with demand still strong.
  • Builders and carmakers: They pay more for steel.

Other ways this could play out

  • If coking coal prices ease, steel price increases could pause by year-end.
  • If rate hikes slow housing demand, mills may struggle to make further increases stick.

Price risks

  • A slowdown in housing and autos could weaken steel demand.
  • Lower Chinese demand could push global iron ore prices down regardless of India.
