Indian Fund Houses Halt New Gold ETF Investments Just Before Dussehra and Diwali

Outlook: Bearish · October 16, 2026
Indian Fund Houses Halt New Gold ETF Investments Just Before Dussehra and Diwali

Several large Indian mutual funds have stopped taking bulk subscriptions to gold ETFs and new money into gold fund-of-funds, just before the festive buying season. Industry sources told Reuters the move followed a nudge from market regulator SEBI.

At a glance

  • Existing SIP instalments registered before October 16 continue, but new SIPs, top-ups and lump sums are blocked in affected schemes.
  • Redemptions are still allowed, so investors can sell their holdings.
  • Gold imports fell to $1.8 billion in September from $2.3 billion in August.

Background

A gold exchange-traded fund (ETF) buys physical gold and trades on the stock exchange like a share. A gold fund-of-fund (FoF) is a mutual fund that invests in those ETFs, letting people invest through a regular SIP. When investors pour money into these funds, fund houses must buy more gold, and most of India's gold is imported.

What happened

Several large Indian fund houses issued notices late on Thursday suspending bulk subscriptions to their gold ETFs, Reuters reported via BusinessLine. They include Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund, UTI Mutual Fund and HDFC Mutual Fund. The notices gave no reason, and redemptions remain open.

Fund houses also restricted new money into gold fund-of-funds from October 16, Moneycontrol reported. Kotak, Tata and ICICI Prudential blocked fresh lump sums, switch-ins and new SIP registrations in specified schemes. Distributor platform Creso said HDFC, Aditya Birla Sun Life, DSP and Invesco issued similar notices.

Why the funds stopped

A mutual fund executive told Reuters the decision followed a nudge from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Two bullion industry officials confirmed the halt came after talks with the regulator. DSP's notice cited directions from SEBI, according to Creso, while the other notices gave no reason.

The timing points to imports. Dussehra falls in October and Diwali in early November, when Indians traditionally buy gold. Every rupee that flows into a gold ETF must be backed by physical metal, and most of it is imported. A dealer at a private bank that supplies bullion to ETFs called it "a precautionary measure to avoid a surge in imports in October".

What it means for investors

Existing SIPs keep running. Kotak, Tata and ICICI Prudential said instalments registered before the effective date will still be processed at the applicable NAV. Step-ups and top-ups to those SIPs will not go through, so investors should check what each fund house allows.

The pressure on the rupee is the bigger backdrop. High oil prices and foreign selling of Indian shares have weakened it this year, and the government already raised the import duty on gold and silver. Silver-only funds and multi-asset funds were not covered by the restrictions, Moneycontrol reported.

Our read

Outlook: bearish. Blocking new ETF money removes one source of Indian gold demand during the festive peak. Global prices depend more on the Fed and the dollar.

What to watch

  • Whether SEBI issues a formal statement or more fund houses join the suspension.
  • When subscriptions reopen, and whether that happens after the festive season.
  • October gold import data, which will show whether the halt cooled demand.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-15: Fund houses issue notices suspending bulk subscriptions to gold ETFs.
  • 2026-10-16: Restrictions on new investments in several gold fund-of-funds take effect.

Demand Drivers

Festive buying usually lifts gold ETF inflows, and that channel is now closed to new money.

Government Policies

Regulators are curbing gold investment flows on top of the higher import duty, to protect the rupee.

Currency Impact

High oil prices and foreign equity selling have weakened the rupee, raising the cost of gold imports.

What could lift prices

  • Investors blocked from ETFs may buy coins, bars or jewellery instead during the festive season.
  • A weaker rupee keeps domestic gold prices high.

What could weigh on prices

  • A major channel for new Indian gold investment is shut during peak season.
  • September imports had already dropped to $1.8 billion.

Who gains, who loses

  • India's trade balance: Fewer ETF purchases mean less gold to import during the festive season.
  • New gold fund investors: They cannot start SIPs or add lump sums in affected schemes until further notice.

Other ways this could play out

  • If imports stay low in October, fund houses could reopen subscriptions soon after Diwali.
  • If the rupee weakens further, curbs on gold investment could be extended or widened.

Price risks

  • ETF units trading on exchanges could move away from their underlying value while subscriptions are halted.
  • Strong physical buying could offset the loss of ETF demand.
