Lotus Dispatches the First Uranium From Malawi's Kayelekera Mine, Bound for France

Outlook: Neutral · November 3, 2026
Lotus Dispatches the First Uranium From Malawi's Kayelekera Mine, Bound for France

Lotus Resources has sent the first uranium shipment from its Kayelekera mine in Malawi, about 145,000 pounds of uranium oxide. It will travel to Namibia's Port of Walvis Bay and then by sea to Orano in France, arriving by the end of the year.

At a glance

  • Shipping from Walvis Bay is booked for November.
  • More shipments are expected to leave the mine before the end of the year.
  • The dispatch follows the final export permit Lotus received on October 26.

Background

Kayelekera is a uranium mine in Malawi, a landlocked country, so its uranium must travel by road through Zambia to the coast in Namibia. Uranium ore concentrate, or uranium oxide, is converted and enriched before it can be used as nuclear fuel. Orano runs conversion facilities in France.

What happened

ASX-listed Lotus Resources said the first shipment of uranium has left Kayelekera, Mining Weekly reported on November 2. Four containers holding about 145,000 pounds of uranium oxide departed the mine site for the Port of Walvis Bay in Namibia.

Shipping is booked for a November departure, with delivery to Orano CE Malvesi in France expected by the end of the year.

Why it matters

The dispatch is one of the last steps before Lotus delivers uranium to customers and starts earning revenue and cash flow, managing director Greg Bittar said. Lotus expects more shipments to leave the site before the end of the year.

It follows the Transport and Export Authorisation from Namibia's National Radiation Protection Authority, which Lotus received on October 26 and which completed its permits in Malawi, Zambia and Namibia.

What comes next

"At the same time, we continue to focus on optimising the Kayelekera operations and ramping up production," Bittar said.

The route by road through Zambia to Walvis Bay gives a mine in landlocked Malawi a way to reach overseas buyers. For the uranium market, the first cargo is small, but it adds a new African source of supply.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. The first shipment is small, though Kayelekera adds a new African source of uranium.

What to watch

  • Delivery of the first shipment to France by the end of the year.
  • Further shipments from Kayelekera before year-end.
  • Kayelekera's production ramp-up.

Supply Drivers

Kayelekera's first shipment adds a new African source of uranium supply.

Mining Production

Lotus is ramping up production at Kayelekera and plans more shipments before year-end.

What could lift prices

  • The shipment is small compared with global uranium demand.
  • Lotus is still ramping up production.

What could weigh on prices

  • Kayelekera adds new uranium supply to the market.
  • More shipments are expected before the end of the year.

Who gains, who loses

  • Lotus Resources: It is close to delivering its first uranium and earning revenue.
  • Uranium producers competing for European buyers: A new supplier is now delivering to Orano in France.

Other ways this could play out

  • If shipments continue smoothly, Lotus could build steady revenue from Kayelekera.
  • If transport delays arise on the long road route, deliveries could slip.

Price risks

  • The long road route through three countries could face delays.
  • Lower uranium prices would reduce Lotus's revenue.
