Muthoot Finance's Q2 Profit Rises 27% to Rs 2,977 Crore as Gold Loans Grow 43%

Muthoot Finance's Q2 Profit Rises 27% to Rs 2,977 Crore as Gold Loans Grow 43%

Muthoot Finance's standalone net profit rose 27% from a year earlier to Rs 2,977 crore in the July-September quarter, as its gold loan book grew 43%. The lender raised its FY27 gold loan growth guidance to 25%.

At a glance

  • Gold loan assets under management reached nearly Rs 1.8 lakh crore at the end of September.
  • Provisions for bad loans rose to Rs 515 crore from Rs 95 crore a year earlier.
  • Consolidated profit, including subsidiaries such as Muthoot Money, was Rs 3,278 crore.

Background

Muthoot Finance is a non-banking financial company that lends mainly against gold jewellery, which borrowers pledge as security. Assets under management (AUM) is the total value of loans it holds. The Reserve Bank of India's revised gold lending guidelines took effect on April 1, and the company says both lenders and borrowers are still adjusting to them.

What happened

Muthoot Finance's standalone net profit rose 27% to Rs 2,977 crore in the September quarter, from Rs 2,345 crore a year earlier, Business Standard reported. Standalone interest income grew 38% to Rs 8,730 crore.

Gold loan AUM rose 43% from a year earlier to nearly Rs 1.8 lakh crore. Consolidated loan AUM grew 42% to Rs 2.09 lakh crore, a record for the group.

Why profit grew

Strong gold loan disbursements lifted interest income, The Financial Express reported. The branch network grew to 7,904 from 7,524 a year earlier.

Costs also rose. Finance costs climbed 46% to Rs 3,365 crore, and impairment on financial instruments rose to Rs 515 crore from Rs 95 crore.

What it means

The company now expects gold loan AUM to grow 25% in FY27, up from its earlier guidance of 15%. "We are also revising our gold loan growth guidance for FY27 upward by an additional 10%," managing director Alexander George Muthoot said.

Gold prices in Delhi fell to a 10-month low on Saturday. Lower prices reduce the value of jewellery pledged for new loans, so lenders will watch loan-to-value levels closely.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Gold loan growth shows strong demand for credit against household gold, but it has little direct effect on the gold price.

What to watch

  • How Muthoot Finance shares react when trading resumes on Monday.
  • Whether falling gold prices slow new gold loan disbursements.
  • Asset quality, after provisions rose to Rs 515 crore.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-04-01: The RBI's revised gold lending guidelines take effect.
  • 2026-10-31: Muthoot Finance reports its September-quarter results.

Demand Drivers

Demand for loans secured by household gold grew 43% from a year earlier at Muthoot Finance.

Government Policies

The RBI's revised gold lending guidelines, in force since April 1, are still settling in.

What could lift prices

  • Strong gold loan demand shows Indian households are using their gold as collateral rather than selling it.
  • Higher loan volumes keep more gold in household hands.

What could weigh on prices

  • Falling gold prices reduce the value of jewellery pledged as security.
  • Rising provisions could make lenders more cautious.

Who gains, who loses

  • Muthoot Finance shareholders: Profit rose 27% and the company raised its growth guidance.
  • Muthoot Finance: Provisions for bad loans rose to Rs 515 crore from Rs 95 crore.

Other ways this could play out

  • If gold prices keep falling, new gold loan amounts could shrink and slow AUM growth.
  • If demand for secured credit stays strong, Muthoot could meet its raised 25% guidance.

Price risks

  • A further fall in gold prices would lower the value of pledged collateral.
  • Higher finance costs could squeeze margins.
