NMDC Lifts Iron Ore Output 23% So Far This Year, but Sales Stay Flat

Outlook: Bearish · October 2, 2026
NMDC Lifts Iron Ore Output 23% So Far This Year, but Sales Stay Flat

India's largest iron ore miner, NMDC, produced 27.27 million tonnes of ore in the first half of the financial year, up 22.8%. Sales did not keep pace and were unchanged at 22.23 million tonnes.

At a glance

  • NMDC's April-September iron ore production rose to 27.27 million tonnes from 22.20 million tonnes a year earlier.
  • Sales held at 22.23 million tonnes, the same as a year earlier.
  • In September alone, output rose to 4.04 million tonnes while sales fell about 9.5% to 3.51 million tonnes.

Background

NMDC is a state-owned company and India's largest iron ore producer, with mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. It publishes production and sales figures every month. Iron ore is the main raw material for steel, so NMDC's sales are a useful signal of demand from Indian steelmakers.

What happened

NMDC produced 27.27 million tonnes of iron ore between April and September, up 22.8% from 22.20 million tonnes a year earlier. Its sales over the same period were 22.23 million tonnes, unchanged from last year.

September showed the same pattern. Output rose to 4.04 million tonnes from 3.75 million tonnes a year earlier, while sales fell about 9.5% to 3.51 million tonnes from 3.88 million tonnes.

Where the gap opened

Chhattisgarh drove most of the growth. Production there rose about 28% to 18.92 million tonnes from 14.78 million tonnes, and sales rose to 16.42 million tonnes from 15.13 million tonnes.

Karnataka was weaker on the sales side. Production rose to 8.35 million tonnes from 7.42 million tonnes, but sales fell about 18% to 5.81 million tonnes from 7.10 million tonnes. That drop in Karnataka sales almost exactly offset the gain in Chhattisgarh, leaving total sales unchanged.

What it means

Over the six months, NMDC mined about 5 million tonnes more ore than it sold. That points to ore building up at its mines rather than flowing to customers.

Flat sales suggest that demand from steelmakers has not grown as fast as NMDC's output. If stocks keep building, the company may have to compete harder on price to move its ore, which would matter for steelmakers' raw material costs.

Our read

Outlook: bearish. Output growing much faster than sales points to rising stocks, which can weigh on domestic ore prices. A pick-up in steelmakers' buying would ease that.

What to watch

  • NMDC's October production and sales figures, to see whether the gap narrows.
  • NMDC's monthly iron ore price revisions.
  • Steel production trends in India, which drive demand for NMDC's ore.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-01: NMDC reports April-September output of 27.27 million tonnes and sales of 22.23 million tonnes.

Demand Drivers

Sales held flat at 22.23 million tonnes, suggesting steelmakers' demand is not keeping pace with output.

Mining Production

NMDC's April-September output rose 22.8% to 27.27 million tonnes, led by Chhattisgarh.

What could lift prices

  • Strong output shows NMDC can meet a rise in steel demand quickly.
  • Chhattisgarh sales still grew to 16.42 million tonnes.

What could weigh on prices

  • About 5 million tonnes more ore was produced than sold in six months.
  • September sales fell about 9.5% from a year earlier.

Industry impact

IndustryEffectReason
Iron Ore MiningNegativeRising output with flat sales points to building stocks.
SteelPositiveAmple ore supply could keep raw material costs in check for steelmakers.

Who gains, who loses

  • Indian steelmakers: Plentiful ore supply gives them more room to negotiate on price.
  • NMDC: Unsold ore ties up working capital and may pressure prices.

Other ways this could play out

  • If steel demand picks up after the monsoon, NMDC's sales could catch up with output.
  • If stocks keep building, NMDC may cut prices to move more ore.

Price risks

  • A rebound in steel demand would quickly absorb the extra ore.
  • Export demand could change NMDC's sales picture.
