NMDC Starts Its Rs 5,427 Crore Pellet Plant and Slurry Pipeline in Chhattisgarh

NMDC Starts Its Rs 5,427 Crore Pellet Plant and Slurry Pipeline in Chhattisgarh

NMDC has commissioned a 2 million-tonne-a-year pellet plant at Nagarnar in Chhattisgarh, fed by a new 135-km slurry pipeline. The Rs 5,427 crore project turns low-grade ore waste into steelmaking feed and takes ore trucks off the road.

At a glance

  • The project links a new ore processing plant at Bacheli to the Nagarnar pellet plant through a 15 MTPA slurry pipeline.
  • It lets NMDC upgrade iron ore fines and slimes from its Bailadila mines, which are hard to sell as they are.
  • NMDC is working toward 100 million tonnes a year of iron ore capacity in the long term.

Background

NMDC is India's largest iron ore miner and is owned by the government. Mining leaves behind fines, very small ore particles, and slimes, a muddy waste with lower iron content. Beneficiation upgrades them into a richer concentrate. Pelletising then rolls that concentrate into hard balls that blast furnaces and direct-reduction plants can use.

What happened

NMDC has commissioned its 2 million-tonne-a-year (MTPA) pellet plant at Nagarnar in Chhattisgarh. The plant is the final piece of a Rs 5,427 crore project that also includes a new ore processing plant at Bacheli and a 15 MTPA slurry pipeline.

The pipeline runs 135 km from Bacheli to Nagarnar and passes through 61 villages in the Bastar and Dantewada districts. Bad weather kept officials away from the site, so the company monitored the commissioning remotely from its headquarters.

Why NMDC built it

The project turns material NMDC could not sell easily into a product it can. Fines and slimes from the Bailadila mines are processed at Bacheli into concentrate, pumped as a slurry to Nagarnar and rolled into pellets there. The pellet plant uses straight grate induration, a process that hardens pellets on a moving grate.

The pipeline also changes how ore leaves the mines. It cuts the need to move processed ore by road and reduces NMDC's reliance on the railways. "Today is a day of immense pride for everyone at NMDC. This has not been an easy project to execute," said Amitava Mukherjee, NMDC's chairman and managing director.

What it means for India

India's steelmakers are adding capacity and need more pellets and better-quality ore. NMDC produced a record 53.16 million tonnes of iron ore in 2025-26, the first time an Indian miner has crossed 50 million tonnes in a year. Making pellets from waste fines lets it squeeze more usable iron from the same mines, as it works toward 100 million tonnes a year of capacity.

Shares of NMDC Steel, which runs the steel plant at Nagarnar, rose nearly 2% after the announcement. A dedicated supply link from Bacheli gives the Nagarnar site steadier access to feed.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Two million tonnes of pellets a year adds useful domestic supply but is too small to move global iron ore prices. The bigger effect is on NMDC's costs and product mix.

What to watch

  • How quickly the Nagarnar pellet plant ramps up to its 2 MTPA capacity.
  • Throughput on the 135-km slurry pipeline in its first months of operation.
  • NMDC's next steps toward its long-term 100-million-tonne ore capacity goal.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-09-27: NMDC commissions the 2 MTPA pellet plant at Nagarnar, completing the Rs 5,427 crore integrated project.

Demand Drivers

Growing Indian steel capacity needs more pellets and higher-quality ore feed.

Mining Production

Processing fines and slimes from Bailadila lets NMDC get more saleable iron from its existing mines.

What could lift prices

  • Pellets usually sell at a premium to raw fines, which could lift NMDC's margins.
  • A pipeline link lowers transport costs and avoids rail and road bottlenecks.

What could weigh on prices

  • More domestic pellet supply could soften local pellet prices.
  • New plants often take months to reach full capacity.

Who gains, who loses

  • NMDC: It turns hard-to-sell waste fines into pellets and cuts its dependence on road and rail.
  • Road haulers in Bastar: The pipeline replaces some of the truck trips that moved processed ore.

Other ways this could play out

  • If the pipeline runs close to its 15 MTPA design, NMDC could expand pelletising beyond Nagarnar.
  • If ramp-up stalls, NMDC may keep relying on road and rail for processed ore.

Price risks

  • A slump in steel demand would reduce the value of new pellet supply.
  • Bad weather like the conditions that kept officials off site could slow early operations.

Historical comparison

  • FY2025-26: NMDC produced a record 53.16 million tonnes of iron ore, up 20.62% on the previous year.
