Ramaphosa Opens Vedanta's ₹5,757 Crore Gamsberg Expansion, Doubling Zinc Ore Capacity

Ramaphosa Opens Vedanta's ₹5,757 Crore Gamsberg Expansion, Doubling Zinc Ore Capacity

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday opened the second phase of Vedanta's Gamsberg zinc mine, built for about R10 billion. The expansion doubles ore processing, and Ramaphosa backed Vedanta's plan to smelt the zinc locally.

At a glance

  • Gamsberg Phase II lifts the mine's zinc-in-concentrate capacity to about 500,000 tonnes a year, according to Vedanta.
  • The investment of about R10 billion, or around ₹5,757 crore, is among South Africa's largest mining investments in a decade.
  • Ramaphosa welcomed Vedanta's plan for a Northern Cape zinc smelter, which still depends on a power-price deal.

Background

Gamsberg is a zinc mine near Aggeneys in South Africa's Northern Cape province. Vedanta bought the asset from Anglo American in 2011, and its southern African zinc business is run by Vedanta Zinc International. A concentrator crushes ore and separates out zinc concentrate, a semi-finished product that a smelter then turns into refined zinc metal.

What happened

President Cyril Ramaphosa inaugurated the Gamsberg Phase II concentrator plant in Aggeneys on Friday, the Press Trust of India reported. Indian High Commissioner Prabhat Kumar attended the ceremony. The investment came to about R10 billion, or around ₹5,757 crore, a figure India's Consulate General in Cape Town also gave in rand.

The new plant doubles Gamsberg's annual ore-processing capacity from four million tonnes to eight million tonnes. Vedanta says the mine's zinc-in-concentrate capacity rises to about 500,000 tonnes a year. Ramaphosa also opened the mine's first phase, in February 2019.

Why the smelter matters

Ramaphosa used the event to back Vedanta's plan for zinc smelting capacity in the Northern Cape. Gamsberg currently ships concentrate, so a smelter would let South Africa sell refined metal instead. He urged investors to create local jobs, transfer skills and support nearby communities.

The smelter is not yet approved. Vedanta Zinc International chief executive Vijay Kumar told Miningmx on October 12 that the project, estimated at about $1.5 billion, depends on a competitive electricity price. He called the remaining gap with the government small.

What it means for India

Ramaphosa presented Gamsberg as a symbol of ties between the two countries. "Today, more than 150 Indian companies have established a presence in South Africa," he said, naming Vedanta as an example. He said he had discussed trade and investment with Indian business leaders at the 18th BRICS Summit, held in New Delhi last month.

For zinc buyers, Gamsberg adds mine supply to a market where Kumar says concentrate is short. The extra tonnes will arrive gradually. Kumar said earlier this week that the second phase should reach its full rate within about two months.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Extra concentrate from Gamsberg adds mine supply, which could ease a tight concentrate market over time. Any effect on refined zinc prices should be gradual as the plant ramps up.

What to watch

  • How quickly Gamsberg Phase II reaches its full rate of about 500,000 tonnes a year.
  • Whether Vedanta and South Africa agree an electricity price that clears the way for the smelter.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-12: Vedanta Zinc International's chief executive says the smelter decision depends on a competitive power price.
  • 2026-10-16: President Ramaphosa inaugurates the Gamsberg Phase II concentrator in Aggeneys.

Supply Drivers

Gamsberg's doubled concentrator adds new zinc concentrate supply as the second phase ramps up over the coming months.

Government Policies

South Africa wants more local processing, and Ramaphosa publicly backed a Northern Cape zinc smelter.

Refinery Output

Refined zinc output would rise only if the smelter wins a power deal and an investment decision.

What could lift prices

  • A slower-than-planned ramp-up would keep zinc concentrate supply tight.
  • Smelters still compete for concentrate that Vedanta's zinc chief describes as in short supply.

What could weigh on prices

  • About 500,000 tonnes a year of zinc-in-concentrate capacity is a meaningful addition to mine supply.
  • A Northern Cape smelter, if built, would add refined zinc capacity outside China.

MiningPositiveA large concentrator expansion lifts South Africa's zinc mining output.

Who gains, who loses

  • Vedanta Zinc International: It doubles Gamsberg's processing capacity and gains political support for a smelter.
  • Zinc smelters: Extra concentrate eases competition for a scarce raw material.
  • Other zinc miners: New Gamsberg supply could weaken the terms they get for their concentrate.

Other ways this could play out

  • If Vedanta secures power at a competitive price, the Northern Cape smelter could move toward an investment decision.
  • If the ramp-up slips, Gamsberg's extra tonnes would reach the market later than planned.

Price risks

  • Faster-than-expected growth in concentrate supply could weigh on zinc prices.
  • Electricity costs in South Africa remain the main hurdle for local smelting, as Vedanta has said.

Historical comparison

  • February 2019: Ramaphosa inaugurated Gamsberg's first phase, eight years after Vedanta bought the asset from Anglo American.
