Tata Steel's India Output Rises 10% to 6.21 Million Tonnes in the September Quarter

Outlook: Neutral · October 9, 2026
Tata Steel's India Output Rises 10% to 6.21 Million Tonnes in the September Quarter

Tata Steel produced 6.21 million tonnes of crude steel in India in the July-September quarter, 10% more than a year earlier. Deliveries rose 7%, helped by record retail sales and a 19% jump in steel for carmakers.

At a glance

  • Indian deliveries rose 7% from a year earlier to 5.97 million tonnes.
  • Higher output at Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar drove an 8% rise from the previous quarter.
  • Steel sold to the automotive sector rose 19% to about 1.1 million tonnes.

Background

Crude steel is the first solid steel made from molten metal, before it is rolled into sheets, bars or coils. Steelmakers report it each quarter as a measure of how hard their plants are running. Deliveries show how much finished steel they actually sold. Tata Steel's two biggest Indian plants are at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and Kalinganagar in Odisha.

What happened

Tata Steel said on October 8 that its Indian plants made 6.21 million tonnes of crude steel in the second quarter of FY27. That was 10% more than a year earlier and 8% more than the 5.76 million tonnes of the first quarter. Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar accounted for the increase.

Deliveries in India rose 7% from a year earlier to 5.97 million tonnes. Domestic deliveries were 15% higher than in the previous quarter. Over the first half of the year, production rose 10% to 11.97 million tonnes and deliveries rose 8% to 11.14 million tonnes.

Where the growth came from

Tata Steel credited a richer product mix and stable demand across market segments, despite the monsoon. Sales of automotive and special products rose 19% from a year earlier to about 1.1 million tonnes. The company linked that to the ramp-up of its continuous annealing and galvanising lines, which heat-treat steel sheet and coat it with zinc.

Branded products and retail sold about 2.2 million tonnes, the segment's best quarter ever. Abroad, Tata Steel Netherlands produced 1.52 million tonnes of liquid steel and delivered 1.30 million tonnes.

What it means for India

The numbers show steady demand at home. Rival JSW Steel reported this week that its quarterly crude output rose to 7.27 million tonnes. India's finished steel consumption grew 7.5% in April-September, faster than domestic output, according to Ministry of Steel data.

Higher steel output also means more demand for iron ore and coking coal at Indian plants. Tata Steel's second-quarter financial results, due later, will show whether the extra volume came with better prices.

Our read

Outlook: neutral. Higher Indian steel output adds steady demand for iron ore, but one company's quarterly volumes do not move global ore prices.

What to watch

  • Tata Steel's Q2 FY27 financial results and its realised steel prices.
  • Whether automotive steel volumes keep growing as the new coating lines ramp up.
  • Steel imports into India while demand runs ahead of domestic output.

Detailed analysis

Timeline

  • 2026-10-08: Tata Steel reports India crude steel output of 6.21 million tonnes for Q2 FY27.

Demand Drivers

Tata Steel cited stable demand across segments, with automotive volumes up 19% and record retail sales.

Mining Production

More crude steel from Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar raises the plants' need for iron ore.

What could lift prices

  • Indian steelmakers are running harder, adding steady demand for iron ore.
  • India's steel consumption grew 7.5% in the first half, ahead of domestic output.

What could weigh on prices

  • India's steel demand is growing faster than its output, which leaves room for cheaper imports.
  • Volume growth alone does not show whether steel prices are holding up.

Who gains, who loses

  • Carmakers in India: Tata Steel is supplying more automotive-grade steel as its coating lines ramp up.
  • Iron ore suppliers to Tata Steel's plants: Higher crude steel output needs more ore.
  • Steel importers into India: Rising domestic output competes with imported steel for the same buyers.

Other ways this could play out

  • If demand stays steady after the monsoon, Tata Steel could keep output near its second-quarter pace.
  • If cheap imports keep flowing, higher volumes may come with weaker prices.

Price risks

  • Global iron ore prices depend mostly on Chinese steel output, not Indian volumes.
  • Weak results later could show volume gains offset by lower steel prices.
