India's Gold Discount Shrinks to $8 as Festive Buying Picks Up, World Gold Council Says

India's Gold Discount Shrinks to $8 as Festive Buying Picks Up, World Gold Council Says

Indian gold demand is gaining strength ahead of the festive and wedding season, the World Gold Council says. The local discount to official prices narrowed from an average $66 an ounce in September to $8 by October 16.

At a glance

  • Listed jewellery retailers grew revenue 20% to 30% in the July-September quarter.
  • Indian gold ETFs took in ₹44.5 billion in September, the most in seven months.
  • Old-gold exchange rose more than 10% and made up over half of sales at some retailers.

Background

When Indian demand is weak, local dealers sell gold at a discount to the official domestic price; when it is strong, the discount shrinks or turns into a premium. The festive season, from Dussehra to Diwali, and the wedding season are India's busiest periods for jewellery buying.

What the WGC found

Seasonal gold demand is gaining traction as India enters its festive and wedding period, World Gold Council analyst Kavita Chacko wrote in a market update. The domestic discount narrowed sharply, from an average $66 an ounce in September to $8 as of October 16.

The recent fall in prices has helped. Gold ended September at $4,176 an ounce, down 8.5% on the month, while domestic prices fell a more modest 4.8% to ₹1,47,613 per 10 grams because a weaker rupee cushioned the drop.

Jewellers report strong demand

Manufacturers report healthy order flows as retailers restock, and footfall in stores is improving. Listed jewellery retailers reported revenue growth of 20% to 30% in the July-September quarter, despite key festivals shifting into the next quarter this year.

Value is growing faster than volume. Buyer numbers rose in the mid-single digits while average ticket sizes rose by double digits, reflecting higher prices and premiumisation. Old-gold exchange rose more than 10% year on year and accounted for over 50% of sales at some retailers. Bar and coin demand has moderated as price momentum eased.

Investors are buying too

Indian gold ETFs took in ₹44.5 billion in September, the highest in seven months, adding nearly 3 tonnes to bring holdings to 124 tonnes. They added 140,231 new investor accounts during the month. Inflows continued in October, though mutual funds suspended fresh subscriptions into gold fund-of-funds from October 16.

Our read

Outlook: bullish. Stronger festive demand in India supports prices. The WGC still notes a discount to import parity, showing domestic supply is adequate.

What to watch

  • Whether the local discount turns into a premium as Diwali approaches.
  • Gold ETF flows after the suspension of fresh gold fund-of-fund subscriptions.
