Overview

Aluminium ingots are the standard block-shaped units primary aluminium is cast into once it leaves the smelter, sized for easy stacking, storage and transport rather than for any particular end use. They're the physical form behind most aluminium trading — when a price is quoted for primary aluminium on the London Metal Exchange, it's effectively pricing standard ingot delivered to a registered warehouse.

How It's Manufactured

Molten aluminium tapped from smelting pots is alloyed to a target specification, then cast on continuous or semi-continuous casting machines into one of several standard shapes: small remelt ingots for foundries, larger sows and T-bars for bulk handling, or rectangular slabs and cylindrical billets sized specifically for rolling mills and extrusion presses. Casting speed and cooling rate are controlled carefully, since they affect the metal's internal grain structure and, in turn, how well the ingot performs when it's remelted or worked further downstream.

Byproducts

The casting stage generates dross, an oxide-rich skim trapping some usable aluminium, which most producers recover through dross processing rather than discard. Furnace off-gases and particulate emissions from melting and casting are managed byproducts, typically captured through baghouse filtration. The smelting step that produces the molten metal in the first place generates its own separate byproducts, chiefly spent pot lining, but ingot casting itself is a comparatively clean, low-waste finishing stage.

Who Consumes It

Buyers span the full range of downstream aluminium processors: rolling mills remelt slab into sheet and foil, extrusion plants remelt billet into profiles, and foundries remelt small ingots into cast components. Wire rod producers and secondary alloy makers are also regular buyers, and commodity traders and warehouses hold standard-grade ingot as a storable, investable commodity separate from any specific manufacturing use.

Everyday Uses

Like unprocessed metal generally, ingots don't reach consumers directly — their relevance to daily life is entirely as the raw material behind finished aluminium goods, from the foil in a kitchen drawer to the frame of a bicycle. One place ordinary people come close to the concept of ingot is investment: a few bullion dealers sell small aluminium bars as novelty or industrial-metal investment products, though this remains a minor niche compared with gold or silver bullion.

Industrial Uses

Standard-grade ingots and sows feed general-purpose casting and alloying operations, while higher-purity or specification-controlled billet and slab feed more demanding applications — aerospace-grade extrusion billet or can-stock slab, for example, both need tighter compositional control than general commercial ingot. Ingot's standardized shape and weight also make it efficient to stack, ship and store in bulk, part of why it remains the default form for both physical trading and long-distance shipment of primary aluminium.
